This recently acquired used Pavilion dv7-2173cl originally came with Vista and was upgraded by seller to W7 Pro 32-bit thru OEM disc set just prior to shipping.

While it has demonstrated capability to recognize new hardware insertion(external TV tuner express card, WiFi antenna booster), it fails to recognize wireless headset...and therefore I cannot add it to Bluetooth system.

My old HP Pavilion dv7-1170us with OEM Vista Home Premium did have similar problem with the same headset(unable to find driver at first, then unable to recognize later on) but thru repeated tweakings it finally worked(unfortunately I have forgotten how I did it). During the course of its functionally, the headset most often worked perfectly but sometime did not.

I am still learning this upgraded W7 system and I am hoping someone most familiar with W7 can help.

W7 and SP2

I just acquired a used Pavilion dv7-2173cl with upgraded W7 Pro 32-bit SP1.

I remember my old Pavilion dv7-1170us also originally came with factory installed SP1(Vista Home Premium 64-bit) and Windows Update automatically provided and installed SP2. It did not function fully until SP2 was installed(like IE upgrading).

Now, I am having one(so far)problem...it does not recognize BT peripheral device (my wireless headset). I wonder if missing SP2 is the reason. Windows Update is not providing/installing SP2 and Microsoft Download Center has none.

Does W7 come with SP2?

Windows 7 is basically "Vista improved", not a complete different OS, like going from XP to Vista or from Vista/Win 7 to Windows 8. All the Vista drivers work with Windows 7. Usually, on a Win 7 install it will install most of the drivers for you. Windows will not install the correct sound driver in most cases and will only install the generic, basic function, "HD Audio Codec" thus you should download the correct sound driver from HP.

Sound Driver: IDT High-Definition Audio CODEC Driver - HP Pavilion dv7-2173cl Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support=

About the only driver that could remotely have an affect on attaching/attached peripherals is the Intel motherboard chipset drivers. Suggest you download and install that (and then restart the PC). See if that helps.

Done Intel chipset Utility installation two days ago...and re-installed it again just now(to make sure) and re-started per your instruction....and did not solve problem

It's deja vu...had identical problems with Vista and this same headset.

Just like with Vista, the headset is now recognized and added to PC but cannot find driver...and therefore BT system can't use it. W7 Device Manager is now showing 4 entries of BT Peripheral Device each one with yellow mark(requires driver). Trouble shooting and Microsoft Fixit both unable to solve driver installation issue.

I did some tweakings with my old Vista that solved it...but I forgot exactly how. However, I still remember I did install(instinctively)several drivers from HP support site which seemed to have finally did the trick. But I do not know which driver in particular did it.

I have installed just about all the drivers from HP site except the 17 drivers for multimedia smart:

They all have to do with DVD programs(playing/burning movies, music, pics/vids discs)

Windows 7 does NOT have SP2, it has just a single service pack (SP1), contrary to Vista, that has 2 (SP1 and SP2), so with SP1 you've already got the latest one. If a device is not working, maybe you're missing a driver needed for it.

I have an ACER Aspire 5100 that I have rebuilt. The computer has been fine for two years, but in the last couple of months, it has developed some kind of system issue; system, as in, hardware. I say that because it fails to start. It fails to start ANY HDD, with ANY OS (Win 7, Win 8, 8.1). I have 3 HDD's that I have interchanged between two different computers. I also have an MSI. The MSI takes the same HDD's and runs perfectly. The Aspire doesn't run with any of them.

I have run tests on HDD; Memory, System. I have used HBCD, Hitachi DFT, SeaTools, all to test the drives IN the laptop. There are never any problems. I try to start the computer, I get 0xc0000001, 0xc0000221,and there's another one. But all research on the error codes, and the subsequent procedures suggested yields nothing, 0 (zero), zilch, nada.

Needless to say, I am frustrated. As a builder, I need to know how to complete builds. I'm glad this is my computer and not a customer!

So, I pull out the Big Gun, Brink! My man! What else do I need to do?

OK...I am making progress with this headset... now recognized and labeled by W7 as SY-BT Headphone (SY for Sheng Yun). I even did not know that is the device's brand.

But W7 cannot install driver. Vista did. So what does Vista have that W7 does not?

Well; you may have to see what it labeled the manufacturer is again and go to the site for that company to see if there are any updated drivers that may work for it.

Manufacturer's support dept. claims these devices do not need driver by themselves. PC and other Bluetooth devices (like smartphone)should be able to connect with the headphone through Bluetooth.

Well, that's what seemed to have happened with Vista. W7 just cannot do it.

I am proudly glad to announce my problem with SY-BT Headphone is over. (Thanks to many advices and comments from W7 Forum members).

But it took some work. Having messed up with mindless installation of drivers and software from HP support site, I decided to start fresh. I re-installed system image from the recovery discs I created. Then tediously installed all the requisite updates from WU. Fully updated, I went back to HP site and installed ONLY available drivers not related to Bluetooth that are newer than what already are in Dev. Mgr. (there were only two as opposed to more than 15 I had previously installed carelessly, thus installing actually so many OLDER drivers...my bad).

Then with Bluetooth problem in mind I installed two : Realtek and Broadcom(3 years newer). ...both recommended for W7. Finally I installed one Integrated Bluetooth Module for Vista(because it seemed there was none for W7) guided by this advice from W7 forum member Fireberd:"Windows 7 is basically "Vista improved", not a complete different OS, like going from XP to Vista or from Vista/Win 7 to Windows 8. All the Vista drivers work with Windows 7".

And just as Brink always says: "That's it"

It's weird how those to OS's, Vista and 7, are so closely linked. I think Windows 7 is as good now as XP was years ago. It is a great OS. But, like Firebird said. it is Vista improved. I went from 7 to 8/8.1 and lost a bunch of functionality with the ACER laptop I came on the site to complain about. I, like you, installed a plethora of drivers, trying to install my wireless LAN, my VGA, the modem, and the card reader. I troubleshot the driver installations and chose Windows 7 compatibility. Practically nothing worked correctly. I went back, installed with Vista compatibility, BAM! They all work now, sans the card reader, and I don't know what to do about that thing.

But, like BRINK says: That's it!

Nearly three weeks of W7 and I still miss Vista. I am still not convinced W7 is an improvement. I think it is Vista, streamlined. Many features of Vista are more elaborate, to a fault, with cross-over redundancy.

Basically, W7 removed redundant features of vista. That's it. The only improvement I know so far is IE11, Vista being stuck on "obsolete" IE9.

W8 is actually a mind-boggling OS, especially for IT's. Unfortunately, I really do not have much use or interest in most of its features for what I use PC for. To me it's like owning a Maserati and driving it only in Manhattan... 25 MPH, tops.

That's a bet, on the Maserati! Windows 8/8.1 is tablet software. If they had a version that didn't cater exclusively to the swipe and tap crew, it could be a good OS. As far as Windows 7/Vista, I fought Vista all the way through SP2, so I saw it get better and better, until it became useful. Anything short SP1 and it's a dog..., out for a poop stop!

IE11 is not on my list of tings I like yet. there are too many sites that I use constantly that it doesn't support. It's still kinda beta anyway, so it'll get better.

Many sites urged me to get rid of IE9...advised me to get FF or Chrome or IE11. Thing is, I see no difference between IE9 and IE11. BTW....IE11 is no longer Beta.

IE11 has been released as non-Beta in November last year. It has been an automatic update for W7 thru WU.

I thought the only diff between Vista's 9 and W7's 11 versions was slight increment in speed. But it seems I am wrong. The speed difference apparently is more substantial:

"According to Computer World, the IE11 has 29 percent more speed than Google's Chrome 30 web browser software, 32 percent than Mozilla Firefox's 25 browser, and 26 percent than Opera's Opera 17 softwar

This announcement from CW did not compare 11 with 9, but considering that IE9 was just at par with these mentioned other browsers speed wise, you can deduce by inference how much speedier 11 is than 9.
