W7 will not boot

Unbelievable. I introduced an APC1500 BackUPS Pro to protect my system, and the first try on putting computer to sleep (which should close down all associated equipment) and restarting, my computer was zapped!

It will not boot now. I have tried a repair with my original installation disc, but no go. I am pretty sure that I read somewhere about fixboot and fixmbr, in my XP days, but do these things still apply in W7, and where would I find a writeup on what and how to repair the boot?

I DO hope someone can help.

I have tried fixmbr which gives positive result, but fixboot says element not found.

This am tried a system restore (yes, I do backup system image) but get an error message that says something like a disk needed is not available, remove from exclusion list or clean or remove from machine.

Anyway, despite the fact that my machine is fully loaded and it will take some time, I have decided to reinstall W& from scratch then everything else. I keep all my data plus post, on a second large disc, so hope that I can get back to normal in not too long.

There are so many tools available, but none which answered for my problem.

The hard thing is that this was caused by putting protection on the system with an expensive APC 1500 Pro. It sais it was adjusting system params then.....

RE Fixing the MBR, that only works if your faulty W7 installation is actually listed, else you can't proceed. That is the case here. I discovered that after my original post.

New instal is going along nicely, but finding licences and stuff is the really big job.

If you didn't format the drive during install process, you should have your previous files stored in a folder called Window.old.

It should be possible to retrieve your licenses from the registry stored in there, if necessary.

Good luck.

Thanks for the comment. Actually, I have a big mirror raid for data, so all my data is intact. All the MyXxxx are located there, so for example my outlook.pst is OK. My system disk only has the system and all the installed programs.

I have thought that perhaps I should install all my programs on my big data disk. But I would stll be in trouble if the system disk crashes, as the programs can't be accessed unless we have the original registry, and I have found that, for me, trying to backup the registry and restore it to a new system is just totally unreliable. I would be interested in a comment on the practicality of this, and any users who have experience of doing this successfully?

There are many ways that MS could make it possible to insulate all the programs and data from the operating system, in such a way that one could be restored without losing the other. I have, at least, managed to insulate the data.

Back to re-installing all my programs... I am now storing all the licenses in Roboform, my password-remembering software:). I only had to reinstall R, and as I was using the Online synchronisation, I had all my passwords back in 5 minutes. Best bit of software I have bought! Even if the interface is among the worst.
