W7 X64 - how you know W7 is using WMP11x64 or WMP11x86?

Both WMP11X86 and WMP11x64 are in W7, and when I view "about" both x86 and x64 of WMP11, it doesn't show if it's x64 or x86...so how to tell? or it's automatically defaulted to WMP11 x64 since it's W7 x64? if this is the case then why is WMP11 x86 included?

If W7 x64 is using WMP11 x86 as default, how can I make WMP11 x64 as default WMP instead of WMP11 x86?

WMP x64 is located here C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player

too find out if a application in Windows is x86 or x64, it is simple.

go to the official shortcut, check the proprities, if the app .exe is in the "ProgramFiles(x86)" folder it is a x86 version, if it is in the "ProgramFiles" folder it is an x64 version.

the the case of Media Player, it is a x86 version.

WMP 11 isn't in Windows 7, it's WMP 12. And the x86 is set as default for compatibility reasons. You can tell by right clicking the taskbar and going to the task manager, if it says wmplayer.exe *32, then it's the 32 bit one in use, if it just says wmplayer.exe, then it's the 64 bit in use. The 64 bit one is found at Computer/Local Disk C/Program Files/wmplayer.

There is a tutorial on changing the default 32 bit to the 64 bit for Vista, not sure if it works in Win 7 though.

Then again using the x64 version of Windows Media Player might bring about more trouble than it's worth, as you have to make sure you have x64 versions of the codecs that your videos need in order to be played. And I'm sure that x64 codecs don't exist for nearly all compression schemes yet.

Exactly. And that is why it is the 32-bit version that is included on the taskbar and in the start menu by default.

There's a much easier way which works in 7.
Rename the 32bit wmp folder in programfiles(x86), copy the 64bit wmp folder in there.

Instant 64bit default.

Let's see how you fare on this one! The actual clue was a slight difference in memory used when both were sitting idle!

The 32-bit version is on the right-hand image. Although you are no longer giving any clues with the image name, it still gives itself away because of the ... after the filename, which indicates that there is more information available than can fit into that column.

Can you tell this time? A clue is still there, but it is not as obvious.

What this thread does indicate is that it is important when looking for information, and that information is presented in columns (as is the case with Task Manager), that you resize the columns so that they show the full amount of information available in that column.

That isn't the only method however of finding out which WMP12(x86 or x64) is the default however. The properties when right clicking on the WMP seen on the Start menu clearly shows the location in the properties>target location.

However since everybody got the two tests rather easy I upped the anty a little if you notice the two WMP icons now seen on the taskbar. Can you tell which is the 32bit or the 64bit there? Have fun with that one! :roflmao:

With a simple right click on the wmplayer.exe in the 64bit folder you can pin that directly saving a few steps if you want that one instead. If you unpin the default 32bit you simply go back into the Start menu to repin the 32bit version even if you have to right click, choose copy, and paste the copy on the desktop first to see that dragged onto the taskbar.
