Walmart's Black Friday Rip-off

The problem is systemic. As long as there is no legislation to protect the employee, they are not going to change. In Germany, Walmart opened a lot of shops. But they had to deal with the local laws and the unions. They lost millions year after year and folded tent after 7 years. Their system and the German system were incompatible.

You know I believe that the company really went downhill after Sam Walton died and now the company is ran by his kids...

Wal-Mart used to be a great store to buy from...not so much anymore

It still is a great store to buy from, depending on where you live/time of year. It saddens me that they are no longer 24/7 over here. I use to love going there at 3am when I was bored.

Regardless of personal experiences (the Wal-Mart at my college is 24/7 and is normally great to buy from...), the quality of the company and its stores has went down over the years...

Well, I suppose that is true. The employee's seem a bit more dense as well. I tried exchanging a Xbox 360 controller for a different color (I spoke to the manager earlier to confirm I could do that, I was within the 30 day return/exchange limit).

The person I spoke at the store wasted 1 hour of my life trying to tell me I couldn't do that and that I only had 14 days with Xbox 360 Controllers to exchange/controllers. I didn't let it go, went to a different manager (first one I spoke to wasn't there, the next one was late) and he told the worker that I DO have the right to do it and I AM within the ""30 days"" The receipt said I had.

Got an apology for the trouble, got my full money back and the product for free (with the different color I wanted). I think I got side tracked in this post. :o

I work at Wal-Mart as full-time overnight Associate, I don't fall for all the BS that non-informers spew about Wal-Mart since it's a great store to work at.

The whole ticket thing went out at my store for Wal-Marts own personal "pre-Black Friday" 3 weeks ago, we had long lines of customers come in at 12am till around 6am buying tickets for the real Black-Friday. The only way you can know is to ask the damn Associate, don't come in here and complain because you KNOW Black-Friday is around the corner and lots of big stores have deals that go on before that big event to help customers get in first on the actual day. So next time, ASK!

Oh yea, it's hilarious how when anything becomes remotely SUCCESSFUL people are quick to jump on it and hate it. I congratulate Wal-Marts superior power with the Capitalist system. Haters move to China or get in a time-machine and go to Soviet Union. Wal-Marts all over the country are constantly hiring new people, hell my Wal-Mart went through 6 months of rigorous Remodelling when the Economy is in the toilet. We are STILL hiring lots of people on a daily basis. That speaks for something good. Wal-Mart is the ONLY damn place hiring in my town of 10,000 people for god sakes.

Except...it is false advertising to offer a deal that will be available on Black Friday only to sell the deal beforehand...

It would have been different if Wal-Mart had advertised it as a Black Friday deal with the ability to also "pre-order"...

I think that Wal-Mart (and many other companies) are losing sight of what Black Friday is all about...it is a ONE DAY shop-a-thon where you can expect good deals with some competition to boot

How is it false advertising? NO ONE knows about it unless you ask, hell a lot of the non-Electronic Dept. Associates had no Fing clue about the tickets either, including me until I asked what was going on with the long lines all night. You just have to ask, and Wal-Mart isn't losing sight what Black Friday is about because we have group meetings every day before we start work and we constantly discussed "Event Day" aka Black Friday way back in October until the last second when it started at 5am SHARP, but I wasn't there (THANK GOD) because it was my weekend off.

I work at Wal-Mart as full-time overnight Associate, I don't fall for all the BS that non-informers spew about Wal-Mart since it's a great store to work at.

Lets see, reasons why Walmart isn't so great
#1). Average wage for "associates" is $6.00 to $7.50 per hour. This places employees with a family below the poverty level
#2). Walmart is anti-union and instead want employees to take up complaints with upper management...where it can far more easily be ignored.
#3) Turnover rates of approx 70% within 1 year kinda speaks for itself.
#4). Full time employees who are eligible for health benefits often skip it (about 50% decline) as the employee has to pay 35%...which is about 2x the national average.
#5). Although they fly the made in the USA flag, about 85% comes from Chinese "sweatshops".
#6). Censorship of all music
#7). Participation in "dead peasants" insurance plans on employees.

Yeah, I don't like Walmart, I don't go to Walmart and I have no intention of changing my mind anytime soon. I'd rather go without.

We are STILL hiring lots of people on a daily basis. That speaks for something good. Wal-Mart is the ONLY damn place hiring in my town of 10,000 people for god sakes.
Well, they run others out of business and pay next to nothing...so they have to rehire all of the time because people quit whenever they can find anything else. And with lower wages, they tend to bring down the local economy and bring neighborhoods and such down closer to the poverty level. Not too much to really be proud of there I'm afraid.

The one thing about the last post there that rings a bell is pushing other retailers out by the one stop shop for everything concept at least with their SuperCenters which will include an auto repair shop as well as a food store. By undercutting the competition exventually other retailers lose too much business and either close up or relocate.

Another thing depends on how is managing which store since some are not well maintained as others! Plus you have the volume inventory problems mentioned before where once sold out always gone mentality for the next wholesale volume they decide to stock up with. I guess this thread covers all the grievances as well as the support from some!

With both sides heard the jury is now out!

The real difference is quality and service. Wal Mart may have everything for cheap, but there is something lost in service. With a Mom and Pop shop, they know you and you know them. Maybe you get a small discount, but you know your helping a friend who does good work on your car (or w/e) and you trust them.

On the other hand, if you just want to go buy a box of Froot Loops, then it really doesn't matter.

1: Says who? This is my first ever job and I'm 20 with high school diploma and I work in the Produce Department where I make $12.55 an hour. Pretty damn good I'd say.
2: Wal-Mart is anti-union for good reasons, why do you think American automobiles are so expensive? Because the companies have to pay the auto workers and pay retired workers for as long as they live. So they jack the prices up. If Wal-Mart was a union place, it wouldn't be CHEAP, do you want to spend more on products? or less? make up your mind, can't have both. Learn economics.
3: That health insurance rate is garbage, I have it and I don't pay not even CLOSE to that. I pay 3%.
4: Chinese sweatshops? so what? You can't possibly blame Wal-Mart for that. They don't make the products they sell, only "Great Value"/"Equate"/"MarketPlace" which almost all are straight from America or Canada. Blame the American government for raising taxes and tariffs to send our manufacturing jobs overseas.
5: Censorship of all music? what the hell does that mean? You mean music sold in the stores? I see all kinds of different genres available.

And good for you, make your little heart more "cool" that you don't shop at Wal-Mart. Get a life. One less arrogant customer I have to deal with during the twilight hours of the day.

I found supporting articles at Wake-Up Wal-Mart: The Real Wal-Mart Facts, PBS - STORE WARS: Wal-Mart Business Practices and books such as Amazon.com: Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price: Robert Greenwald: Movies & TV

If Wal-Mart was a union place, it wouldn't be CHEAP, do you want to spend more on products? or less? make up your mind, can't have both. Learn economics.
Other stores in my area such as Meijer are members of the UFCW union and their prices are on par and inline with Walmart. And you don't have anti-Meijer books on Amazon.com as you do with Walmart. And I am confortable with my understanding of Economics as I have a bachelors degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting.

why do you think American automobiles are so expensive?
I wasn't aware that American automobiles were any more expensive than the foreign competition. To me they all seem equally expensive.

3: That health insurance rate is garbage, I have it and I don't pay not even CLOSE to that. I pay 3%.
There must be confusion on what this number entails...as nobody pays as little as 3%. Maybe these will help shine some light on the matter;
Wake-Up Wal-Mart Blog: Wal-Mart's Health Care Is Still Inadequate

Maybe they are making strides here as suggested that they are onboard with the latest Obama ideas to get away from their previous negative opinion;
Wal-Mart backs employer health insurance mandate - USATODAY.com

4: Chinese sweatshops? so what? You can't possibly blame Wal-Mart for that. They don't make the products they sell, only "Great Value"/"Equate"/"MarketPlace" which almost all are straight from America or Canada. Blame the American government for raising taxes and tariffs to send our manufacturing jobs overseas.
So what??? Really. You care so little that you see nothing wrong with a company that claims to be "USA made"...but yet gets most of their goods from sweatshops.

The reason for using the sweatshops is not to ensure a low price for consumers...it's there to ensure high profits at any cost. At the end of the day, these uber cost cutting measures ultimately just run all of the other shops out of town and a lack of competition hurts the consumer.

5: Censorship of all music? what the hell does that mean? You mean music sold in the stores? I see all kinds of different genres available.
Yes, censorship of music sold. That means specifically that Walmart does not sell any cd that contains a parental advisory sticker. Instead, Walmart sells an edited version of the cd to the consumer...often times not informing them that they are getting an edited or alternate version of the cd. You can find this information right from Walmart.com: Save money. Live better. as shown here;
Walmart.com: Music: Music Content Policy.

While some say this is to promote good family values, I have to ask why don't these same family values apply to books and movies also sold within the store. Why can I get an R rated movie at Walmart, but not a CD like Green Day's latest album; (both contain the appropriate warnings)
Green Day Balks at Wal-Mart Censorship Policy :: Music :: News :: Paste

I'm sorry if it seemed I was attacking you directly. I am not. I just don't like seeing what has been happening in this country over the past 20 years. Corporations like Walmart are often a much bigger contributor than a lot of people think. While some consumers will simply go to the retailer with the lowest absolute price, others will evaluate whether the means to get that price are worth it. I fall into the latter category.

Edit: If you want some interesting reading, pick up "Fast Food Nation" and see how the proliferation of cheap food at any price has had a negative impact on the world in general. It's eye-opening to see the nitty gritty details behind those $1 menus.
