Hi,

Was running Win 7 32, bought win 7 64 (cos i bought a new chip and mobo), but having real issues installing it.

I have tried the upgrade and clean install (booting from the DVD), but it seems it wont find me HD driver (?).

How do i format the drive from the win 7 64 install disc - cos i dont get the option?

Another issue is that sometimes Win 32 wont even boot the Win 64 disc in the drive, and goes straight to login screen? I have checked my bios, and boot from DVD is definately on.

So basically, is there a way to format the current drive with win32 on it, (remember it boots into win 32), so that i can install my new win 64 from the dvd?

Thanks!

When you install,. check the Advanced option rather than the upgrade.

Does the DVD fail to boot and install properly? What is the exact error message?

Once you can boot from the DVD, you can format the drive by choosing Custom and then Advanced drive tools to Delete, create New, and Format whatever partition(s) you have or want.

You get the format automatically when you perform a "clean" install.

I only got the DVD to load once, and thats when it asked to connect to the internet to find drivers.

I accepted, and then it failed on trying to identify my HDD.

I am guessing a complete clean install would be the best way forward. What is the best way to format the drive (after booting into win32), so that i can pop the win 64 disc in the drive and start afresh?

Thanks for your help!

why not just download whatever drivers you need before hand. that way when you install the os you neednt bother with updates or anything. drivers can be installed manually once your os is up and running. are you certain your system can handle a x64 os?

Can't run a 64 bit installer from a 32 bit environment.

Is there any error message?

The best way to format the drive is booting from the installer. Otherwise you can use a 3rd party partition manager.

Hey Greg,

I don't get a chance to get to the format screen. I ran setup, i said go ahead connect to the internet, and then it says it cant find my HD driver.

I then couldnt get the dvd to boot (after changing the boot sequence to dvd first).

So now i am sitting with a dvd that wont boot, and an install (from within 32 bit which i know wont work) saying it cant find my hdd.

Which 3rd party partition jobbie can i use (and will it work formatting from within the 32 bit win 7) and then trying to install win 64?

The GParted application is the GNOME partition editor for creating, reorganizing, and deleting disk partitions.

A disk device can be subdivided into one or more partitions. The GParted application enables you to change the partition organization on a disk device while preserving the contents of the partitions.

With GParted you can accomplish the following tasks:

  • Create a partition table on a disk device.
  • Enable and disable partition flags such as boot and hidden.
  • Perform actions with partitions such as:
    • create or delete
    • resize or move
    • check
    • label
    • copy and paste
GParted uses GNU libparted to detect and manipulate devices and partition tables. Several optional file system tools provide support for file systems not included in libparted.

GParted is developed on GNU/Linux. It can be used on other operating systems, such as Windows, by booting from media containing GParted Live.

GParted is free and open source software available under the terms of the GNU General Public License

Thank you.

Using Gpart worked.

I managed to install windows - but for some strange reason, while using the 64bit disc, when i rebooted and logged in, My Computer says its installed the 32 bit operating system.

Why!!!??
