want to restore backup image to a new hard drive

Hi, I was wondering if I can get some advice on how to add drivers to the Recovery Disc (DVD). My hard drive is acting up lately and I wanted to make a clone of it. so I made an image backup of it on a external hard drive. Now I want to restore that backup image to a new hard drive (same size and same manufacturer, but unfortunately I run into a problem where the Recovery Disc does not recongize my new hard drive and therefore will not let me restore the image on to it. From what I can tell, I'm thinking that it does not have the driver in the Recovery Disc for that Hard drive. Is there a way to get that driver put on the Recovery Disc.

Describe this recovery disk. Where did it come from? Burned? Bought? Can you make another?

I'd expect that your "recovery disk" is something you would attempt to boot from to restore an image. Are you able to boot from this "recovery disk"?

You say "does not recognize my new hard drive". Do you mean you can boot with the recovery disk and locate your previously made image file, but you cannot select the new hard drive as a destination for the image restoration? Or do you mean something else?

You didn't say what application you are using to make and restore this image. A lack of proper drivers on the recovery disk can prevent it from booting your PC, but I've never heard of not being able to choose the new hard drive as a destination if the PC can in fact boot from the recovery disk.

More details needed as to exactly what programs you are using, what you have done, and what exactly you cannot do.

Hi, sorry for not including more details.

The software I was using was part of Windows 7 (Restore and Recovery). I use this tool inside Windows 7 to build an image of my current hard drive (one partition, C letter assigned) to external hard drive via USB . During the end of this process, it ask me if I want to create a recovery boot CD. I went ahead and said yes to creating the CD.

With the PC off, I then remove my old hard drive (465GB) which has my OS on it and I proceed to restore it on a new hard drive. I insert my CD to boot computer and was able to get to Windows restore tools up. So at this point, I have the new hard drive (same size as old, 465GB) inserted to Slot 0 (SATA) and my external USB drive which has the backup image. When I select to restore, the Windows tool complain that I don't have any disk to restore to.

I then use the command window to run diskpart.exe and I try to find the my disk using the command "list volume" and "list disk" and both commands return only my external USB hard drive and not the drive ins slot 0 of amy SATA connection. For some reason, it does not recongize the new hard drive.

Can anyone offer any advice on how I can get my image restore to the new hard drive?

I don't use Windows Backup and Restore and cannot help you with it. It's too fussy and cranky, so I gave up on it.

Most here use either Macrium, Aomei, or maybe Acronis to make and restore images.

There is a good Macrium tutorial on this site. Perhaps you can start over and make a new image with it.

You need to confirm independently that the new drive is not broken. Perhaps you have a bad cable or a bad port. I'd at least try to format it as a data drive only and see what happens.

Someone else may be able to help you with the Windows program.

Put your old C: drive back in the computer and then start the computer with the rescue disk you made. Try to do a System Restore or just select the DOS prompt. Does the computer recognize it? If so, then you must have a problem with your new hard drive.

Or, use a boot CD like Hirens boot CD. Go to "Mini XP Mode" when the computer boots from the Hiren's boot CD. Select "My Computer" Select "Run" then type in diskmgmt.msc. Does the boot CD recognize the new hard drive?

I just formatted a hard drive on another computer using the Windows 7 boot disc, and it worked just fine. I was also able to restore a system image to this computer using an external USB hard drive. It also worked just fine.
