"Wants" Versus "Needs" ?

Anyone here ever feel like buying things not because they need it but just because it would be fun plus cool to have ?

Well for a few days now I've been contemplating getting the new gaming Alienware M11X laptop, to replace my rather "crappy" eMachines laptop that I am currently using.

Basically money is rather tight for me and If I would get it, I would finance it and pay for it through "Installments" then when I have the money I would pay all of it off in about 6 or 7 months from now.

Anyways I really want it, and my psyche doesn't always agree with me on these type of things ! :p

Obviously I don't need it and my current laptop works, however I want to be able to game and unfortunately my eMachines can't handle the latest games, but the M11X can !

Should I just go ahead and finance it, then pay it off later ?

I need your guys opinions, I'm going mad here deciding on this ! :p

Thanks

I know we don't need or want bumps :p

I'm the wrong guy to ask - I'm a want guy. My car really needs repairs, so I upgraded my rig instead ;)

I'm also of a fan of paying for it all in one go. I hate owing money.

I don't know where abouts in Canada you are from, but there is a new laptop coming out that will blow everything out of the water. MemoryExpress in AB is going to be selling it for $1800, don't know if this is comparable to an mx11.

I am completely a wants based person.. Do I really need a new comp this year, no, but I want one.. I try to pay stuff off fairly quickly, just part of my nature.

In case you are interested in another option, here is a link: PC CANADA - ASUS G73JH-A1 I7-720QM W7HP64 8G-DDR3,1TB(500GX2),BD COMBO, 17.3LED,ATI5870 1G GDDR5,BT [G73JH-A1]

I currently live in Ont, Anyway I don't think I'll be getting it, money is just too tight at the moment and after reading a number of customer complaints against Dell Consumer complaints about Dell Computers - Financing, Leasing, I just think I may steer clear, wait 6 months then indulge and buy a much more powerful system then what I originally intended !

Do yourself a favor and pay for it ahead of time.

Because you are " Unsure " what to do, wait. Put the money you would be
paying for the computer in a savings account ( at a bank ) just as if you were paying for
the Computer. Than when you have accumulated the necessary funds, buy it.

This accomplishes three things,

1. It gives you time to be sure that this is really what you want to spend
your money on.

2. It saves the Dollars which would be wasted on finance charges.

3. You will make a little from the interest bearing account.

And a bonus: In the mean time you may find that their is something else
which you may want more and now you will still have this option.

It is a Win Win situation. The only hard part is the waiting, but the
satisfaction you will feel at the end will be priceless.

Richard

PS: It may also get you in the habit of saving money which will improve
your life for years to come.

For a while I have been wanting a laptop. I have a good desktop, but a laptop would be fun to take places and use. Like I could go to Starbucks and sit and play on the computer and drink coffee. The fact that I have never been to a Starbucks makes me think that there is a possibility I would not go in the future. I suppose this is why I have not bought one. I recently had a couple hundred extra dollars but I chose to "waste" it by getting new brakes for my truck instead of a new laptop. Sometimes I make these kind of decisions. I should be getting some money back on my income tax return, but I will probably just buy something foolish like new tires for my truck.

Talk about needs and wants... I got an exclusive case from Thermaltake (Level 10) sitting in the corner of my room... When I bought it, it was all good, I feel the "joy" and "completeness". After the dust settles down... now I'm 700 bucks less rich, I can't use the case (since the ventilation is very minimal), and since the box is huge, it took some precious room on my already small room...:cry::cry:

Thank you rerice !

That's an excellent idea, I've got a savings account but have never used it yet but now I will.

thanks again guys as they say : "Patience is a virtue" and "Good things happen to those who wait." Cliches, yes but it's true !

a lot of this is how you grew up, for instance im a want person, i take care of my responsibilities and i feel like i deserve to have nice shiny new things, it's very evident that i got this obsession with stuff from my parents. macie(my boss/gf for those in the know) is different, she is worried something will happen someday and we will go broke and wants to save every penny for when that time comes. this comes from her mom.
