Warm Reboot??

Hi,
I remember a functionality in Vista/XP where you could hold the SHIFT button for a warm reboot which effectively avoided having to go through BIOS POST.
I have tried this in Windows 7 however no luck.
Has this been removed? if so that suck cause i have a RAID controller which takes a long time to go through all of its tests/init.

Are you sure the RAID test is part of POST? your computer must go through POST when it turns on. Windows 7 wouldn't have an effect on this, as it is initiated after the BIOS does its thing.
Have a look through your BIOS settings and see if anything has changed, look for 'quick POST' or something to do with RAID.
If the tests aren't part of POST, and are part of windows init, then I am not sure how to help.

Not sure if you are familiar with the concept of warm reboot, let me explain what i am looking for, a warm reboot when initiated should not reboot through the bios again so therefore it would only unload windows and reload without actually going back through the whole process.
This was often used in Windows 98 back in the day, a message would come up saying windows is now restarting and before you knew it you could log back in to windows without having to go through memory test, har drive detection etc...

Your right, it use to happen by holding control when you chose restart. It would then restart without going through the bios process, therefore much quicker reboot. I am yet to find it myself in win 7 although must admit have not really looked for it. I'm sure it will be here somewhere.

Wow, that's a very interesting feature I never knew about. I too have a raid0 XP setup and hate the long post screen of the raid upon restarts. If this works for XP on restarts, I'll be a happy camper.

Is it the "shift" or "ctrl" key for XP?

Hope this does turn out to work on 7 though, as I do plan to use it on the desktop when its rtm. Please keep us up-to-date if anyone finds the solution for Se7en.

Pretty sure that feature was not inclued in XP and beyond. I used to use it in Win98. Maybe Win ME too.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunatly it doesn't work on any NT based system since around NT4.


If your still running a Win9x system it is the shift key btw, just incase you need to reboot your calculator quickly!

Thanks for posting, guess the OP (first post) was incorrect in stating Vista/XP. Oh well, at least reboots for me on the desktop are not needed to often anymore. When a restart is needed, I grab the can of compressed air and do a little dusting / cleaning up. :shock:

I've been using sleep for my workstation off-hours, hibernate for my tablet. There's no way of getting around some RAID controller initialization there, since they're powering down then up, but it is much shorter than the full BIOS boot. I could never get sleep / hibernate to work under XP x64, but they work great in Win 7. Sleep is a fine substitute for the "remember folder positions" option which is not currently working but at least got put back in the past couple of builds.

As stated in an earlier post this does not work since Win9x. What it was doing was dropping out of Windows into DOS then restarting Windows. Since DOS was dropped in Windows 2000 it no longer works.
