Thats a good find Wolfgang. As a scientist by profession, I'm always trying to give my children a perspective of the scale of our existence.

My favorite object reference is the red supergiant star Betelgeuse (they like it because it sounds like well...."beetle juice" to them, and they can see it - it sits in the constellation Orion, in the armpit of the upward pointing arm of the constellation). It's so large, were it to be centred at where our Sun sits, its outer edge would extend to completely enclose Jupiter at its furtherest orbital point from the Sun.

As my daughter points out : if its that big, and you can see it, then its very big indeed.

I once had a book called "The Three Pound Universe," which was about the brain. I tried reading it and made progress for a while, but it got pretty darn technical...

But anyway, maybe the only reason these things are big is because our mind can perceive them and ascribe them that value. And if I can imagine something bigger, then that must mean that ideas are the biggest thing of all.

Mmmmm, I don't think so, because, for example, I don't think the mind is able to FULLY grasp the total concept and understanding of "infinity" -- as in an infinite universe with absolutely no end to its space, and no end to its time, either past and future. Yes, we understand the words, but not what infinity really is. . .
