Week in Microsoft: trolling other OSes for fun and prof

With the launch of Windows 7 coming up next month, Microsoft is working hard to get the message out about how its flagship product compares to its rivals. Tales of Microsoft trolling the competition top this week's list of the biggest Microsoft stories.

It started out with Linux. Microsoft training material for Best Buy employees—which not only makes Linux look bad, but is also full of inaccuracies—leaked to the Web. The idea was to dispel Linux myths from the facts.

Next up was Apple. A Best Buy insider sent us screencaps from another Microsoft presentation. It not only makes Macs look bad, but is also full of inaccuracies. We've got screenshots and commentary on that presentation, too.

Over at the Cowboys Stadium, it looks like somebody didn't shut down one of the Windows computers properly. The embarrassing message flashed during Cowboys Stadium's national debut, ensuring that the Oklahoma Sooners weren't the only ones in the arena with a red face.

A new Office 2010 Mondo build has leaked into the wild and it seems to be an early beta. The build number is 14.0.4417.1000, and we have screenshots, including the new icons.

Microsoft is preparing a huge Windows 7 marketing campaign. We don't know yet know what it will be like, but three concept videos are giving us a big hint.

What appears to be the first Windows 7 commercial has made its way online. It features a little girl by the name of Kylie, who some will remember from a previous Microsoft advertising campaign.

Microsoft is investigating reports of a new vulnerability that affects both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, ultimately issuing Security Advisory 975497 in regards to the issue. There are a couple of workarounds for the flaw.

If you live outside of the US and want to buy one of the upcoming Zune HDs, you're out of luck. Microsoft has confirmed that it currently has no plans to offer it for sale elsewhere in the world.

Add an encounter with an employee's iPhone to the list of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's antics at company events. Ballmer took the offending device, made some sarcastic comments about it, and continued to tease the offending employee throughout the evening.

Microsoft has released a Laptop Hunters "Behind the Scenes" video. We're wondering if this video is meant to wrap things up before the Windows 7 campaign debuts.

It's all fun and games, till some blue screens.

Hey, by the way, I installed that JDownload program onto my computer and it messed up the Win7 install, I'm gonna have to do a clean install to fix it as a restore didn't.

I don't know. When I installed it it asked to make a change to my registry, is that normal?

Anyways, after installing it, my computer stopped shutting down and going into sleep mode properly.

I uninstalled it and most of the problems went away, but I still have the occasional problem when the computer goes to sleep it crashes.

Well the normal person in truth is in fact most likely not going to want to deal with Linux. About that memo they sent BestBuy.

I have no problem with Linux and it sure has its spot, but not for an average home user looking to buy a laptop/desktop.

If I was selling someone a computer I would not recommend them a linux box unless they knew what they were talking about.

Just my opinion.
