A few days ago I noticed that I had some symbols in my playlist for itunes and they turned into boxes. I didn't think too much of it and was going to get the alt codes for them again. Today, I notice I have these weird boxes in my volume control.

There's nothing really wrong, it just bothers me. Anyone have a fix to it?

I recently had a virus before this that is now removed. Could it have deleted something? Fonts maybe?

You should be able to right click the speaker icon on the tray and go into volume control options and uncheck the boxes next to those items. If they still appear I would put it to cpi interference from the virus, and basically suggest a reformat.

...you may want to wait for someone else to chime in before taking a drastic measure though. I know vista and xp pretty well but am still a tad new to 7.

If you're talking about the square character that is appearing in the title of an item, then this is perhaps a side effect of a custom theme you may have applied.

Have you recently installed any custom themes that has change the look of Windows? I ask because the screenshot you have provided appears to have been modified by a custom theme.

Perhaps going back to the default Windows theme might solve this problem of yours?

ah yes, I was mistaken in thinking he wanted to get rid of all the extra items in his volume control. Now I see the boxes. Registry corruption could cause that.

Going to the default Windows 7 theme, those weird boxes are still there.

Is there any way to fix it besides a reformat? I don't have any registry backups.
