are you using a wireless router? if so , you may need to enable security. anyone within your broadcast range can pick up your signal and connect to the internet through your router if security isnt enabled.

Yes I'm using a wireless router.
The security settings are: WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) and it has a very long password which I have the router randomly generate.
