Weird network issue in Build 7068 x64

Hey,

I am having a strange problem with one of three Windows 7 computers on my network. Let's say my network SSID is "networkname".

So I have this laptop that I'm setting up on the network for the first time. It successfully connects over wireless to "networkname". However, after a few minutes, the connection switches to local only. No more Internet. So I try troubleshooting it by disconnecting from and reconnecting to "networkname." Now the computer spends a full minute or two in the "Identifying..." stage of connecting to the network. When it's finally done, it says I am connected to local and Internet, but the connection is "networkname 2". And with that technically-incorrect name, the laptop can no longer connect to my homegroup, or view any network-shared files. The other two Windows 7 computers on the network (one running Build 7068 and one running 7000) are able to create and join homegroups, and share files and folders to each other just fine. But none of these features are working now on the laptop, I'm assuming due to the incorrectly reported SSID.

So how do I get Windows 7 to drop the weird "2" from the end of the network name and hopefully fix the networking issue?

You'll have to delete the references to both networks (after removing the current network) by following the instructions at Annoyances.org - Eliminate 'Multiple Networks' and Get Your Internet Back in Windows Vista to get rid of them - see if they still apply to Win7 (I don't ahve multiple networks so I cannot verify for a fact that this works....

Unfortunately, those instructions don't work in Windows 7.

Meanwhile, I've changed the network name and switched it from WEP to WPA. Hopefully tonight I'll be able to see if this works.

It should be removable from the registry, but I'd have to check when I get back home - and that is probably 12 hours away.

I'll look on this machine (7068 x86) and see if I can find some comparable keys....

Well, I finally got the computer to use the correct SSID, and it still can't access the local network.

You might want to look at the Network & Internet settings in Control Panel. There an option to 'Manage Wireless Networks' in the left had pane. This allows you to move, edit and remove any previously connected network.

ADDIOTIONAL: Sorry, it's in Network and Sharing center.

This may also apply to wired networks but as i'm not wire connected i cannot say.

The problem no longer appears to be with the network recognition. Does anyone have any other ideas as to why this ONE computer on my network can't interact with any of the other computers?
