Hello guys, im new around, congratz for the forum it's pretty informative.

-Computer composition-
Cpu: Q9300(with a thermaltake cooler+fan)
M/B: p5n-d
Ram: 4*1gb ddr2 800mhz corsair
Gpu: gf 9800 gtx 512mb
Psu: 750w thermaltake
HDDs: 2*500gb seagate 7200rpm + 1 external 1tb seagate(usb connected)

My problems started a week ago or so, by that time i was using vista(x64) and at a point my computer was getting really slow so i though i should do a clean install.

I did a mistake with the partitions when i bought the comp, i made 4 partitions on the 1st disk, with only 30gb for the OS partition. Except that i had a "music" partition and a "games" one which i was using a lot the last year. So i guess the disk was in some hard pressure there, having the OS running, playing some games and listening music at the same time. I didn't have problems that would worry me though.

I did a partition clean up(partition magic) and then did a clean install of vista(x64) again but i felt that the slowdowns were still there. So i started thinking that something was wrong with the hardware. Firstly i checked the temperatures, my cpu was "normal" at 60-70 C, my gpu was 60-80 C. i even raised the gpu fan to reduce the gpu temperatures(100% fan speed reduced the temp by 10+ C) but still my gpu was "normal" too. I tried to test a bit the disk if there was something wrong with it but nothing came out of that.

So i heard about windows 7 and that they are a lot better than vista(indeed they are). So i downloaded the version 7100(x64) from microsoft's site and installed it. At the start the computer was really fast and i was really happy with it cause i thought i solved the problem. I installed the usual stuff, graphic drivers(the latest for win7x64), firefox, windows live messenger+mail, a couple of games and winamp.

After some use though the slowdowns came up again, i don't have anything that could slow down the boot for example, i tried to remove all the startup applications. The slowdowns are really big though it takes like 5mins to start windows and after that it keeps being slow for 5more mins. I even disabled aero and for a bit made windows fly but that was just for some mins.

I was monitoring the cpu+ram and they were at normal states, i didn't have much cpu usage but the applications that i clicked to run was taking 20+ sec to get started, it was like big freezes of the disk and then come backs, can't explain it better.

My WEI ratings are pretty decent, i got 5.9 with the disk being the slower part.

Any suggestions that could help me find the problem? Before i spent money to get new parts and test the hell out of it! :p

Thanks in advance and sorry for the big post.

Hi Monstron,

Check your Diagnostics - Performance logs for drivers/services or applications causing the degradation in start-up performance ;)

Applications using drivers like DaemonTools and VirtualClone CD are usual suspects causing slowdowns while it could also be other applications, checking these logs should give you a very clear picture of the causes... Once you have identified drivers or applications causing these issues then seek updates from the driver/applications vendor.

Another cause is also incorrect over-clocking of your machine or if its not clocked correctly, You can identify if your machine is under/overclocked by examining the results of running CPUZ with the specifications of your machine and CPU ;)

Hope it helps.

Thanks a lot for the reply, i think something is wrong with the nforce drivers but i can't be totaly sure yet. Im thinking to do another clean install, will respond after that.

ill attach an event viewer image, i shouldn't have this warnings after a clean install, nor i should get slow boots/shutdowns.

I think im gonna get a new HDD soon.

If you continue to use superfetch, you will be getting a new HDD quite regularly as it thrashes the crap out of it.

Superfetch is a much hated technology because Microsoft peddled their "we know best" arrogance onto our systems.

HDD's aren't slow (SSD or 15K, or 10K even 7200 anyone) and RAM should not be wasted caching apps you never use.

Good post…I have been having some strange slow down problems that seem to be intermittent. I have had W7 build 7100 installed since its RC release and it’s only really been lately that things have gotten slow so that it’s noticeable. Some times W7 response is fast and things are really snappy then for no reason at all its goes really slow with things taking longer to load and windows explorer seems really buggy, it also seems to affect the internet too. I have run various antivirus scans with nothing detected. I have defragged and cleaned up temporary junk files, and also limited what programmes can run on start and still the problem persists. Shutdown and start-up are fine with me and have not really change since I installed. The thing that really annoys me is the slow down seems to come and go when it wants…using my computer has become a game because I never know how its going to behave. During the slow down it’s still useable but the difference is very noticeable.

I am a little curious about this super fetch so will look it up and try to disable it see if its makes a difference, also I will have a look at the Diagnostics and Performance logs to see what comes up with that. I really cant be bothered to reinstall W7 I am just going to wait it out until October…unless it gets to bad off course...

burtie,

Dont forget that your using the RC 7100 build, the RTM build 7600 fixed a multitude of bugs.

Spazzie,

Its bad enough that your not listening to our advice in your thread let alone spreading FUD into other threads :sarc:

We dont have time for Trolls, You have been warned.

I thought that might have something to do with it dmex :) lol

Well i turned off superfetch...so far so good and no slow downs yet so I am gonna keep testing it out for another week to see if it makes any diffrence. I dont know if it really does as I have read mixed opinions.

We dont have time for Trolls, You have been warned.

So a new user states his/her own real life/business experiences with modern OS technologies such as superfetch and that somehow relegates them to being a "troll spreading FUD" and receive a "warning" for doing so.

How about *respecting* other forum users advice 'dmex'? You might actually learn something from those more experienced in IT than yourself.

Well after all my problem got solved, in a way.

Im using win7 x64 7600 RTM build now on a 60gb SSD and works pretty well.
Im also using the old HDD in a raid with a 2nd identical one and it doesn't show any problems till now.

I haven't found a direct solution to the previous problem but probably it wasn't the hardware by 99%.

For people that have an older version of win7 i suggest to find the RTM build, it might help a lot. The OS is still a newborn which means a lot of work must be done to be something like xp is after all these years.

Time for some testing and reading in the forums :)

Thanks for the help again.
