fortunately, the KB4493132 EOL notification update is not being offered nor does it apply to the Professional, Enterprise and Embedded editions of Windows 7.

I recently ran a Windows Update search on a computer running Win7 Pro and KB4493132 does not show up (ah yes! :D)

I believe the notifications start April 18, 2019...

These notifications will start to show on April 18th 2019 and will state the following message and contain a Learn More link to a Windows 7 End of Life Information article. The notification also include a checkbox that allows you configure the program to not show you the alert again in the future, which is described further later in the article.

I believe the notifications start April 18, 2019...

but they only apply to the home and ultimate editions of Windows 7

Microsoft has updated support KB article 4493132 on Thursday 4/4 with this notice:

Note for organizations

This update is not applicable for devices in managed organizations. More specifically, this update will not install on devices running Professional and Enterprise editions of Windows 7 as well as Windows Server products. We recognize that organizations typically have an IT Pro managing system configuration and Windows 10 deployments. It is important for organizations to shift to Windows 10 ahead of January 2020 – organizations can go here to learn more.

so those using Professional or Enterprise edition of Windows 7 will not be receiving any EOL notifications nor the KB4493132 update itself

Is there a software program out there that can determine if your PC can run Win10? MS offered a scanner to do that with earlier updates, but I cannot find anything current that will scan a machine and make a Win7 compatabilty determination.

nope. that will only come from MS alone.

if you're using name brand PCs like ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Toshiba, etc., check with their support sites for PCs that have been tested for Win10 compatibility as they have a list of machines that are eligible for upgrading from w7/8.1 to 10.

meanwhile, I'll hide the EOL notices on my other win7 machines that use either home premium or ultimate

Thanks...checked that Dell website with service tags. I have the Inspiron 3847 and the Inspiron 620. Seems that the 3847 is Win10 compatable, but the 620 is not.

and it appears Microsoft is now extending the EOL Notifications to Windows 7 Professional users who are not connected to an enterprise domain.

Making the transition to Windows 10 and Office 365 | Windows Experience Blog

Oct. 15, 2019 – We are now extending the notifications discussed below to Windows 7 Pro devices to ensure our customers are aware of the end of support for Windows 7 and can take action to remain productive and secure.
Devices that are domain-joined as a part of an IT-managed infrastructure will not receive the notifications.

KB4524752 double install, unregistered, with gremlins

KB4524752 update listed as being installed on this machine 191018 per 'view update history' but update does not list in 'installed updates', for removal. I got the sipnotify.exe window on Oct 18th, for the first (and last) time.

I'm in the process of preparing this machine to dual boot Linux, with a resized HDD (191012).

The restore points created after the resize are nonfunctional, including two by 'critical update'.

This only discovered after the OS refused to recognize a 1G usb stick this AM. Was previously used to
transfer files from lab bench tests for number crunching, over the last 48hrs, with no issues.

It's OK in WXP and W2K machines - W7 fails to load drivers for 'unrecognized device'.
Still haven't got the device manager to recognize the stick, after removing 'unrecognized device', rebooting etc. I've got numbers to crunch here.

Wupdate wants to install KB4524752 (again) this afternoon. . . .

You think this OS could have held itself together long enough to have reached the support expiry date, but I guess MS is jumping the gun, with their gremlins.

Is it worth searching the usb stick issue separately . . . ?

USB fixed itself.

CHKDSK picked up the usual:

Usn Journal verification completed.
The master file table's (MFT) BITMAP attribute is incorrect.
The Volume Bitmap is incorrect.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

. . . . . . which seems to be endemic for Windows.

Not for much longer, heh heh.

Spoke too soon.

USB backup media went unreadable about 5:30AM, during a pre-install back-up that was almost completed, when last seen at midnight. (backup error code 0x80780034)

Claims it's unformatted, after much dithering.

Needless to say, this media is still readable on other machines W7, WXP and W2K. From there it 'looks like' the back-up completed.

No, this is just disk prep and back-up. Pre-install, as I said.

Got a BSOD/power-on-reset while posting the previous message.

First ever on that system/hardware (6yrs?). Using the laptop at present, with the patient looking at logs, in 'safe' mode. Looks like the back-up usb drive is 'vetoed' . . . ?

Will have to re-evaluate the HDD resize/repartition that preceded the posted problems.
I used Seatools, within windows, to transfer the OS, a week ago.

I used the generic disk mgmnt to down-size the new primary partition on the new HDD (to pre-empt doing so in the Linux install environment) on Friday 18th, prior to these problems with usb recognition, back-up and now BSOD/POR.

At least I can rule out Linux or dual OS issues.

If it's just power stress or the new HDD, might even rule out W7Pro or KBs as well. Timing of KB just a coincidence, it seems.
