Just Joined , minumal PC savvy , Hi y'all

I'm scuttlebuttin and I get stuck a lot cuz I only have basic computer knowledge/ skills.
I didnt see a catgory for asking the following question: If I have an XP os in a compaq PC,and my Dell PC hardrive that had windows 7 ultimate took a crash, no install disc, or activation code ( it was abandoned from a roommate ) can I put the hard drive from my Compaq in the dell cuz the pcu in the compaq is taking a dump and i amazed it booted up this one last time, keep in mind i'm on fixed income, senior retired thanks
