I finally got my new computer, finally moving away from my old Athlon XP computer, now the dilemma, that should I do with the ol' system that has served me true despite it's age?

I agree. I kept my old machine, and now my dad uses it in his bedroom so he can watch online cricket through the TV. :p Anyway, just keep it. You never know when you might need it. :)

Definitely keep it, you might even be able to use it as a server.

Secondhand computers are not worth a lot, you'd have trouble selling it and then you've got the problem of securely erasing or destroying the hard drive when it goes. Sod's law says your new computer will go walkabout when you get rid of the old one.

If you're adamant it's got to go, there's charities and organisations looking after disadvantaged people who probably would be glad of it.

I like the idea of using it as a server and such, but the thing runs hot, it's idle temp is 46C.
And how do I make it a sever? do I plug it in and run an Ethernet cable between my new one and old one?

And modding sounds like fun.

You could try a Windows Eight leaked build on it or a Linux distro. Also, as others have mentioned, it's handy to have a backup. If your new machine won't boot you can still get on here for advice and help.

It's best purpose would most likely be a backup and to hold files on. It is an old system, and even though I somehow got Windows 8 7955 to work on it, I don't think any newer OS's should be put on it. It's Specs are:

AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (2.00 GHz)
1GB DDR Ram @166Mhz
Nvidia GeForce 6200 (128MB) AGP x8
149GB and 488GB PATA Hard Drives, both Western Digital
Soyo SY-K7VME Motherboard

So I think it's best purpose would be a Windows XP backup system and file holder.

Although its specs are poor compared to today's PCs it would have been top-of-the-range when you bought it.

How does it compare performance-wise with today's rigs?

@Dave76: I did that a month ago and has Arctic Silver 5 on it, stopped the overheating but still gets my room to a unwelcoming warm temperature just after an hour.

@A Guy: I have heard of Mineral Oil submersion, but isn't that pricy?

@Seavixen32: Performance wise against a rig of today with a single core, a gig of RAM, and a 128MB graphics card, the machine of today will Sparta it into the pit of death.
