Western Digital Cavier Green 1000GB HDD comes up as 34mb?

hello all,
i used to have a Western Digital MyBook Essential USB2.0 1000Gb External but decided to take out the hard drive and use it as an internal.
yes i lost everything etc etc, but ive been using it for a while now (1 year?)
now only recently i removed it from my PC and put it into another one, Formatted NTFS and started installing Windows on it from the new PC
dont ask me what i was thinking but i decided that computer wasnt worth it so cancelled the install and plugged it back into my computer
now i know its stupid, but now it runs, no errors but in BIOS it comes up as 32mb size and in windows the same thing
ive tried to restore it, EVERYTHING

Please help!!!!

For the record and to confirm: is there ANYTHING on this 32 mb drive that you care about??

In other words, are you willing to concede whatever is on the entire drive, 32 mb partition and the rest of it? And your goal is only to regain its full capacity?

YES!!! it was formatted before it shrunk itself and i only made a partition in hopes it would "fix itself"
i really hope someone can tell me how to restore its original capacity

I'd download Partition Wizard bootable disk and let it operate on that disc.

You will need to burn it to a CD or DVD and boot from it.

If it fails, we'll try to think of something else.

Yep.

It's pretty self explanatory. You have to be sure you are operating on the fouled up drive, not a good drive. You can't rely on drive letters to tell you which is which.

Rely on drive size or drive name to ID the bad drive, or possibly disconnect the good drive before booting from PW.

You want to delete all partitions on it and make one new partition, which will hopefully be correct size.

I'd think so--either it will boot PW or it won't.

But I can't help you with instructions on how to make a bootable USB.

Give it a try. Nothing to lose.

Hi Orblitzer,

It could be that your drive is misreporting its size. ( The reasons can be any of the many )

You may try the following and check whether it resolves your problem.

1. A corrupted MBR can cause this probem. Zero-filling all the sectors with HDD Wipe Tool may reinitialise the HDD to the factory condition restoring full capacity. HDDGURU: HDD Wipe Tool

Be aware that this will completely erase all data on your drive, may take a considerable amount of time to cover all sectors - be patient. Take a walk or bake a cake in the meantime - and you need to format the drive if successful.

2. If the above did not work, read this blog. » Restoring Factory Hard Drive Capacity

Download the HDD Restore Capacity Tool and install it. (32bit Vista is supported. So I presume it works with 32bit Windows 7. - No 64bit)

Power cycle your PC (Switch off, pull out the mains supply, wait for two minutes, switch on and reboot)

Launch the program, select the correct drive with the reduced capacity and then click on the "Restore Capacity" button.

Power cycle your PC again and then reboot.

Does your HDD now show the full capacity?

(Inasmuch as I never came across such a situation to try it out, I am keeping my fingers crossed.)

That would mean that it is not a problem with MBR but with a corrupted firmware of the HDD, which may or may not be reversible.

If it is reversible, the HDD Restore Capacity Tool should be able to unhide the hidden capacity.

If this tool also fails, then I would say that the HDD has "Gone with the wind".
