A friend of mine had a Kaypro II. He ended up marrying one of my sisters. (No connection, I'm sure.) We all marveled at the thing - wow, a whole computer in a box! Truly amazing stuff back then.
He kept it for years after that until my sister finally made him throw it out. It still worked perfectly. He could probably get something for it today as a collector's item.

Here is one of the commercials;
YouTube - Kaypro: The Complete Computer Commercial
I sold mine to an enthusiast a few years ago. I got quite a bit for it!
Was a really good investment, quite apart from all the use I got out of it.

My first computer (was a desktop - tabletop more accurately) was home built by step-dad. It had a massive motherboard with cards that were the size of most encyclopedias. The entire thing was dos based with a monochrome (that sickening green color) text only monitor. I had an rpg game that was loaded from a cassette tape and player attached to the motherboard. LOL I was freaking thrilled when we added the floppy disk drive. The only audio was beeps and blips. There was no case for it, was just attached to a plywood base. This was back in 1982.

While the Osborne was a good deal at $1795, it also came bundled with about $1500 of free software:
CP/M System
CP/M Utility
SuperCalc spreadsheet application
WordStar word processing application with MailMerge
Microsoft MBASIC programming language
Digital Research CBASIC programming language
Source
It was a computer that was portable. Used for whatever they used a computer for way back when

is the CP/M something like DOS? I think it's a safe bet to imply it didn't have any multimedia or games support right?

My first PC cost over $6000 in 1982 and DOS fit on one 160K floppy. And the floppy drives cost over $600 each.
Oh for those days.
