What annoys you?

When I see a member who earned a medal with 699 posts I think it is an indication of quality. There are at least two others with 2 medals who are not Gold members.

As I sit here preparing to deflect the brickbats headed my way, I feel that this is a sore point with me.

The post count is not necessarily a good indication of the quality of users posts. Some people just post to be posting and jack up their post count. I normally don't post to just say, I agree. Some topics have too many "I agree" posts which I believe it just a post count post..

I don't believe that posts should be counted in the chillout or most of the non-technical topics.

Now I have said it. I have a thick skin.

I agree that post count is not indicative, but I for one, do not post to jack up my post count. As Hoppy said, after 2000, it garners you nothing. I'd have no problem with Chillout posts not counting. My job makes me a Chillout resident during the week. Not making excuses, but after an 11 or 12 hour day, I just need to relax, and the word threads are simple fun.

I'm sure I have 10,000 posts in chillout. I got my Gold Member badge at 90 days, and had rarely posted in chillout at that time, so I consider it earned. But things change, and I'm not going to worry that I don't help as much as I used to, or would like. My only concern would be a new member assuming I was more knowledgeable because I have a big post count and medals. But then, I don't think I offer bad advice. If I don't know an answer, I don't post.

I know you weren't specifically talking about me Rich, but I fit the profile I like to welcome new members, and encourage all members when they accomplish something, or have an event in their lives. We're not automatons, and there is more to life, and 7F, in my opinion, then just post an answer, and work as usual.

Hum I never really thought about "garnering" my post count I just post cos I like to reply or say hello or just have a bit of fun.

I didn't know that anything was counted as quality and how do you define that anyway? I was surprised at my guru status to be honest as I don't consider myself anything but a very new starter in computing in depth and why that was granted I have no idea. If it were taken away tomorrow it would be of no consequence to me personally as I just like to be part of this community, which I personally think is the best forum I have ever been on - and that is NO BS either!


It does however seem odd to me that some get superstar status after only a couple of hundred posts and I suppose that is due to quality and not quantity. Now for my money I don't like status chasing for example to pick out a man of the match in a say a cricket match just because he scored the most runs when perhaps there was a fellow or girl who took a great number of catches or bowled very well. Another example would be making the fellow who scored most goals in soccer or touch downs in grid iron - the man of the match when it really is a team effort and they would be no-one without the effort of the rest of the team.

I also intensely dislike those comps where someone is made employee of the month or year - it breeds elitism and in my mind makes the rest who work just as hard but perhaps in a more less visible way like they are not of any worth.

To a certain degree, the rep medals/pips are the same. Often they are given for quality input but just as common has been the culture here to simply rep those you like.

Those in the know, or have been here long enough know who deserve what they sport and those that don't. Unfortunately new members, or new to forums in general; mistake badges, high counts and medals as a sign of knowledge.

The downside is that these new members tend to eschew the correct input of 'less impressive looking members' in favour of the 'high count/repped members' who at times, have no idea what they are talking about.

The majority of my posts are most likely from the word games in the Chillout Room. Like Bill, I also like to congratulate users on their achievements, welcome new users etc. That being said, I still like to contribute to threads made by people asking for help.

Post counts IMHO are pretty much meaningless. They don't affect the quality of a users post so much as the users epeen. As Patrick said, the same principle applies to rep and badges. Sure, they indicate hard work and good, helpful posts but not all good posts are repped and not all repped posts are good.

The system to me though works fine. People are more inclined to help if they are rewarded, even if it is virtually. It's just a funner way of helping others; it doesn't do much if any harm. A low post count and high rep usually indicates a more helpful user but as I said above, it doesn't always work that way.

The downside is that these new members tend to eschew the correct input of 'less impressive looking members' in favour of the 'high count/repped members' who at times, have no idea what they are talking about.

That definitely is a downside. A new user might not be as noticed as a user with a high post and rep count even if they new user has more useful info. Apart from that though, I can't think of anything else that might affect forum users negatively.

You can get a higher post count by asking a lot of questions or moving a conversation along to gain more information. I've always been embarassed by having such a high post count compared to others similarly ranked who have half the posts. But I also am obsessive enough I will discuss an issue to full comprehension and comment when I probably should bite my lip. If I've made a pest of myself I've hopefully also learned something.

The badging system rewards hard work and hopefully excellence, but we could use an Excellence program besides. It should be the goal of the Forums, not a byproduct.

Once you hit 2K it doesn't matter anyway.

My first 2K had less than 100 posts in the Chill Room.

The forum was a lot busier back in late 2010.

About postcount, I am very active over two years, which made my postcount tending towards 10,000 . I am not afraid of that my postcount is that high. I like to talk with others, which rolled it away.

About reps, I am a GFX team member, and a huge percentage of the reps came from making sigs and wallpapers. So if you judge my knowledge based on the repcounts, too, you will be misguided .

What stands in a nutshell .... I am worthless, inspite of having such a big postcount and repcount .

But I adore the affiliation that I get from you guys . I am really proud to be a part of this forums.

This can often be missing from lengthy threads where everything is thrown at the wall. Without the known and established Best Practice being brought to bear we are missing Excellence. What actually annoy me is the crusade against postcounts , I am a post nut, you know I post for if I could help, and to keep in touch with you guys, and sometimes for exchange of opinions . I never post much to be judged as a highly knowledgeable person ... it just comes from within . At the same time, if posting in chillout is that bad, there would not be a chillout room. Admins and mods would not have allowed it in that case, as I think .

meh, what is the problem with a high post count?

it's purely an indication of how many posts you've made.

if somebody makes a lot of posts, then they'll have a high post count - simple. if you're interpreting a high post count to mean anything else, then sir, you are mistaken.

and why should a chillout post not count towards the total? a post is a post. the fact that rep can't be given in the chillout room is enough.
