What are these connectors called on my Laptop DVD-ROM

Hey everyone,

I wanted to get rid of my DVD drive on my laptop and swap in a HHD. I bought a 1T drive and an adapter, but when it came it didn't fit. Take a look at the connectors below. I have the sliver one on top and the HDD adapter that I ordered has the black one on bottom. I need to get another adapter, but I don't know how to search for the correct connector type. I usually order from amazon.com

That is an IDE connector for a 2.5" drive. I believe it is called a "mini-IDE socket". The pins on the bottom provide power. the ones in the middle data.

Oh boy. I screwed up. So my laptop has an PIDE interface and my new drive has a SATA interface. Like trying to get a pig and an elephant to mate (southpark reference)!

Has anyone seen an adapter that is in a tray adapter for swaping in a SATA to a PIDE in the space of a laptop DVD?

You will need to search. The issue is getting the male/female thing right. You need a female mini-IDE and a male SATA adapter.

I found this:

But I think it is backwards.
EDIT: no I think that will do it.

I cannot find any adapters that look like they will work. Guess I'll get a case and use the USB ports :-(

You didn't say what brand your laptop is, but look here:

BTW, no such thing as PIDE, it's called IDE or PATA.
Good luck finding IDE notebook drives, they are very scarce & very expensive.

If you laptop is IDE, there is no adapter for SATA, unless you use a PCMCIA SATA card. You need to know if your laptop is PCMCIA 16-bit or PCMCIA CardBus (32-bit).

I don't think that is a Laptop (2.5 inch form factor) IDE connector? They look very similar to a desktop (3.5 inch form factor) IDE connector but only smaller and with less pins. I have a an old DELL laptop here that has a connector like that. You have to plug a Dell supplied adapter on to the IDE hard drive to make it fit and work. The optical drive has the same or very similar connector but skips the adapter.

EDIT: That plug or connector may be proprietary.

Thanks everyone,

It is a Toshiba laptop and it use to have an HDDVD drive in it. Yeah remember when it was Blu vs HD?

While this does not work If I want to use this as a portable computer, it works for what I need. Drive is in a slim case and plugged into lap top via USB connection.
