What could be causing this network problem?

Me again.

I've now got a graph of my network utilisation to show the problems I'm having.

Both cards have up to date network drivers and are auto-neg to 100Mbps, for some reason they won't go to 1Gbps even tho both cards function that way. One card syncs at 1Gbps, the other (Intel PCIe) does not. Both are up to date Win 7 Pro 64 bit.

Any ideas? It's really annoying me now. Thing is the two gigabit onboard cards both do this on my mobo (Asus about 4 years old) so is this a weird motherboard issue?

Any thoughts? Next on my list is replacing the board with the same one as the other PC.

Could be many things. WRONG (or bad) cable. Incorrect driver (yeah I know you did) L2 cache in cpu, not enough ram, HD disk space.

I also notice it is 10 secs on then 10 off thats a regular pattern caused by something.

We really could use some more info.

I assume since gig speed is important to you you are transferring files or something else intensive. So what kind of transfer speeds are you getting?

Hi Ken,

Sorry for the lack of info and cheers for the speedy reply.

Both systems have 4GB memory, one is an Intel C2Q Q9400, the other is a C2D E6300. Plenty of HDD on both, we're talking >100GB free on both systems.

The driver is the correct (and latest) Intel one on the Q9400 and the Atheros one on the other system.

I ran the cable checker in the Intel diagnostics and it says the cable is good as in 9/10 on it's check.

I want the gigabit network as I move a lot of big files around, plus it's cheap enough now anyways. The switch is a Netgear gigabit one as well.

Transfer speeds start around 10MBps and drop down to 3-4MBps.

An update to this. It turns out Eset Smart Securitys firewall doesn't like it when your network card have the various Offload options turned on as it keeps deciding the TCP Checksums are wrong.

Nice Catch Paul!

Just to help you add to your arsenal of troubleshooting - Try SAFE MODE for testing things like this. It stops the load of things like AV and FWalls... and would have tipped you off about the FWall interfering with your network.

Also - SAFE MODE is the ONLY way to find a virus these days...

Never thought about safe mode

I've opened a support call with Eset as it shouldn't be doing it.

Still have network problems as the cards won't connect at 1Gbps now! If it's not one thing it's another!
