For gaming, Phenom X4. For more general use, Athlon X2, X3, or X4 but I'd always go for the energy efficient ones because they allow a cooler quieter pc build.

To expand on the cool & less power used - New AMD smaller fab chips are due out by late summer which will really reduce power and heat from their present line up!

Hang on till Autumn to upgrade/buy if I was you esp if you want to build a cool/quiet living room multi-media pc.
Also, the new Fermi Nvidia Cards should have reduced in price by then and more choice of (cheaper) motherboards with USB 3 ports/Sata 600 etc for future upgrades.
