What do I do after booting into Safe Mode?

My PC boots into Safe Mode just fine. When I boot into normal mode it fails. I just get a dark screen with the disk drive light blinking. What's the next step? Is there a way to find out what is preventing it from completing the normal startup process?

Do you get the win7 startup animation?
Black screen after login?

Since when does this happen? What did you do just before it (what may have cauesed it)?
