I used to drink them like a mad man, now once or twice a week.

I have never heard that that is a myth! I have to see this for myself. was it started by the water companies or Aquafina?

It seems you have a valid argument here Kirsch. I have never heard a defense to the 8-glass rule.

Although, with people drinking soda's, coffee, and energy drinks all day as stated here, I would still think people need to drink more water.

Well I think most of them are trumped up nonsence.
You ever sit next to someone on a long drive after they have been drinking that jazz? Their breath smells nasty, like pepsi breath or fritos.

I don't have a can of Red Bull here to check the ingredients but I know that some of these drinks also contain Guarrana and extract of Kola Nut.
This is on top of the huge amount of caffeine.
Basically Guarana and Kola Nut are also sold as "legal herbal highs". They are both strong stimulants which, as they are natural products, have not had a great deal of research done on them.
I work in psychiatric care and have had to pick up the pieces after people have been taking these drugs.
At the very least these substances seem to be linked to cardiac arrhythmias and other heart problems.
My experience is that they can cause crippling panic attacks.
As others have said; eat and drink healthily and you shouldn't need this under researched junk. J

The phrase "liquid crack" comes to mind.. I don't buy energy drinks any more. About 3 years ago I took a case of rockstar with me on a road trip to California.. tried to drive nonstop and almost fell asleep at the wheel after only 5 hours. You do get a feeling of more energy, but its always followed by an equally intense feeling of drowsiness

Firstly, this thread is about energy drinks, so I don't want to talk about water too much, sorry OP

in extremely hot weather, if you wait til you feel thirsty before you start drinking water, you're already dangerously dehydrated, and (just to stay on the OPs subject) a Monster or Red Bull would be worse than nothing at all because caffeine is a diuretic.

I used to love Redbull, Monster and Rockstar. I hadn't had any of them in months and when I had one the other day I realised just how NOT nice they are. Think I'm off them for good.

That said I do love Coke which is terrible for you and I would drink Lucozade Sport when playing football (soccer) but it's not so bad I guess.
