What does exactly Bitlocker do?

I have read quite a lot about Bitlocker, but still very confusing. I would like to ask several questions for confirmation:
1) Microsoft introduced that bitlocker can protect unauthorised access to the encripted drive. Does it mean that it also can act as an anti-virus?
2) i have just turned on the bitlocker to encript my C drive and save the key file ( a text file that contains keys inside) in to my E drive (my laptop has 3 drive A C E ). But nothing different i can see after encripting it, i.e. i still can turn on the laptop and access to the C drive which i have encripted, permenently delete some file there. So it means that if unauthorised people get my laptop, they still can access to the drive and make changes in it---> i'm very confused

BitLocker is more targeted towards portable drives such as a USB Flash Drive. To keep the files safe on it. Lets say your an executive at Microsoft and you just finished up some very important coding for a new program, and you put it on a flash drive and ended up losing the flash drive. It'd be near impossible for the person who finds it to get the files off of it. At most they could just format the flash drive but that would just wipe out everyone on it completely.

I have 1 more question i would like to ask: If now i encript a portable drive, and due to some reasons, for example: i lost my laptop, or i clean install other OS, then i will permanently cannot modify the data inside the encripted driver ( i can only read it and copy it with the password, right?).

Well I personally wouldn't find it very helpful encrypting my C: drive. I did that once, was a waste of my time.

If you encrypt your portable drive you should make sure the password is hard for others to guess but easy for you to remember. If your OS gets wiped out or you require to use the encrypted drive on another PC, you only need to enter a password for it. So there should not be any problems using it on a clean install of Windows or another PC.
