What Gives With Nvidia's Drivers?

If I install any video driver updates beyond that which WU wants me to have I end up with an inferior 1280 x 1024 resolution and a grey taskbar and everything is squished. I end up with no nVidia control panel and no higher resolution or landscape setting possible.
I've read the release notes for 181.20 and 181.22 beta and they both supposedly support 1680 x 1050 x 32 @ 60hz W/S for my 7600GS card.
So what gives?
I seem to be doomed to be forever stuck with 179.23, not that I suppose it really matters.

You need to refresh the wei so the OS knows what it can enable.

That's a first. Never seen it before where the system can't detect a new driver the second it's installed.
I'll give it another whirl then. 181.20WHQL or 181.22Beta - ??

Yes 181.22 works well, and yes it shows as win 7 driver. Have been using it with no probs on x64.

The WEI refresh trick had to be employed in Vista occasionally after driver updates too.

I think W7 will say that any Vista driver is a W7 driver....I'll now go through this yet again.

Well, it's a no-go - see attached.

First off, please note that I've installed video drivers more times than most people have had hot dinners, so this isn't anything new to me. It would have been the first time I had to tell Windows to do anything in order to use them, however, had it worked.

So I'm back to those that Windows recommends.

That is odd, I have no problem overriding the WU to install 181.20 WHQL.
One thing I' just noted tho is after I set my color and Digital Vibrance in the Ntune CPL, after an hour or so I lose all of the Digital Vibrance and it's reverted to "0"...odd.

Did you try disabling the automatic driver installation and WU, uninstall the display adapter drivers, reboot and then manually install the new driver without letting WU search & install?

WU didn't stop anything. The drivers installed fine, it's just they didn't work....at all.

Must be something unique with Windows 7 and my particular graphics card...PNY Verto 7600GS.. as I've installed dozens of drivers, both WHQL and Beta in XP and Vista with no incidents, ever.

Is that 7600GS an AGP or PCI-e card? My AGP 7600GS wouldn't even let me install the OS.... (blank screen part way through installation when the drivers were handed from the VGA to bundled nvidia driver).

Did you try deleting the data from the:

C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore

folder to reset the WEI?

Hi, all.

Instead of deleting the performance data manually, you can now do it from the WEI menu.

Open System properties, then go to the WEI screen, then on the far left click on Advanced tools



Now select the first option (as highlighted) called Clear all WinEI scores and re-rate the system



I had to use this when a WEI check failed on me too, Brit. Hopefully this will solve your issues.

AGP and yes.

By the way, the monitor is connected using DVI.

When the newer drivers were installed there was no NVidia control panel and the highest resolution was 1280x1024 whereas the correct one is 1680x1050.
I can only assume that as W7 is in beta MSFT want people to stick with what they provide.
