What happened to the Visual showing how loud the sound is?

On my laptop, the only way to turn up or down the sound (besides using the volume controls in Windows) is to use the F8, and F9 keys. When I would use F9 to turn up the volume, a visual in the middle of the screen would show up, showing how loud my sound is, kind of like on a TV. Now it's not there, and it's really annoying. Any help would be appreciated.

That isn't a sound driver or Windows problem. What it is is a missing keyboard/input/multimedia driver/program, either missing completely or the options for it need to be run and that setting enabled.

It's not fundamental to Windows. It was a utility provided by Dell.
