WHAT HAPPENS if you disconnect a running HDD in these 2 scenarios :

- the drive is in AHCI mode both in bios & in the OS (so hotplugging allowed), but:
- the running OS is installed on that drive


#2 :
- it's a NON-OS drive, but:
- the drive is in IDE mode both in bios & in the OS (so hotplugging not allowed)


nb. in #2 assume the drive's not being written to (so either a reading op, or nothing)

In #1, the OS can become corrupted since the OS doesn't save some things until it is properly shut down. sometimes, it takes several cold shutdowns to do damage; other times, just once can do it. Also, it is remotely possible the drive itself could become.

In #2 (if I understood you correctly), disconnecting the drive while it is running could cause data loss if the drive was being written to at the time. It's remotely possible the drive could become corrupted. Also, you will not be able to access the drive after reconnecting it without rebooting the OS.

corrupted how? (corruption to user data only? corruption to data in user-inaccessible zones like G-list P-list firmware etc? physical?)


in scenario #2 assume the drive's not being written to


- will #1 and/or #2 cause a bsod? (in #2 even if drive's not being read or written)
- can #1 or #2 cause physical damage to the drive in theory?

Fist of all, a drive to be hot plug, it has to be properly set on BIOS.
1- Why someone will disconnect a system drive? Yes, some files will be corrupted.
2- For what I know, IDE drives aren't hot plugged.
