What happens to the Registry during REPAIR install?

Lots of similar questions, but no specific answer.

I need to do a 'repair install' on Win 7 premium - 64 bit system. I can boot and the system runs OK - IE 11 is not running well. I am prepared to take the time to do a repair install.

If I do this type install, does it create a NEW registry? Or save the old registry?

If it retains the OLD registry, I may end up with the same problem. True?

If it creates a new registry, then I would have to re-install all my software. True? If so, I may as well to a complete (fresh install).

I guess I don't understand the effects of a repair install. Can you help me?

Thanks.

It uses EXACTLY the same registry. It resets some parts of it. For example due to the reinstall the services have the default values. Also it "virtually" deletes all detected hardware and redetect everything.

What exact problem do you have with IE11? Did you try to create a new testuser? Please do that and tell us if IE11 is having problems on other account as well. You can remove the testuser later if you wish.

Same registry... waste of time for me.

BRILLIANT suggestion - test user!!!

One of the measureable problems with IE 11 was the fact that I could not set the Google search to 'enable suggestions.' With the test user, I was able to do so without a problem.

So, something about me is messed up. How do I fix? I know that the test user can do something that I can't. I assume it is in the registry...

If I can correct this part of IE, then I can track down other errors and crashes.

Where do I go from here?

Open regedit and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes
It has a few subkeys, open them one by one and keep the one with google stuff in the pane on the right opened.

Post a screenshot. One from faulty user, one from testuser.

The key ending on 77DA is in faulty user as well? It's google stuff isn't it?

P user: in registry searchscope\.......CB2B . Is that google stuff? If so... delete that key.

In testuser run regedit and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes Then open its subkey ending on 77DA (the google stuff that works). Right click on that key->export. So save it in a file. Logoff and logon as user P and doubleclick on the exported file. Now restart IE11. Post results.

Be sure to save the file in a publicly readable folder.

browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\....77DA\FaviconPath and there you change testuser in P.

Made the changes to the registry. They seem to have taken. But there is no change in the behavior of IE11.

We're talking about "suggestions" if typing something in IE11's addressbar. Correct?
Post screenshots of working suggestions and NOT working suggestions. So I know exactly what you mean.

Note the 4th line from the bottom - Search suggestions: disabled. It is not possible to enable this.
Problem does not exist in Test user.

I did note a number of difference in the registry 'Searchscopes' between the 2 users. ??

Can't enable Bing suggestions either - same problem!

Note there are only 5 entries for the working registry. There are 8 entries for the bad user.
