what if i do an inplace upgrade and...

things don't work out, like it just starts messing up. can i use my installation cd to reinstall the OS? or would i have to call microsoft or something? my dad says i should just do an inplace upgrade over vista and if things get buggy, then just reinstall over it.

Many, in this forum have said, that an inplace upgrade is more trouble than a clean install, even if all goes well.

upgrading works but I ended up with a messy C: drive. And it takes forever... Clean install takes like 10 minutes (although not counting re-installation of apps, which I can do in another 10 minutes) whereas upgrade takes probably 6 times that.

you can either format and install (which causes you to lose data) or you can just install on the existing Vista partition provided that there is enough free space on it (16GB recommended, but it will install with less)

i want to format and install, but my dad thinks otherwise... i can basically get everything i need just by redownloading it, although i may need to back up a few drivers.

Wii, if your vista system is working try the update. BUT FIRST make a full backup and also run Windows Easy Transfer. If the upgrade fails (I've done it several time in beta testing with good luck) then you can clean install and use Easy Transfer to restore you files and settings. Check the Tutorials for help or just ask, were here to help.

An in place upgrade may seem like the quickest and easiest way in the short term, but a fresh install is always preferable.

Upgrades do work, but the older your Vista installation is, the more bogged down with 'crap' it will be - increasing the chance of unforseen trouble.



These are a few tips to get a fresh installation up and running quickly:

• Back up all data you wish to save

• Download all apps and drivers you require and put them on a USB, Disc or other partition before you do a fresh installation

• Make a backup of your user and Programdata folders (you can then 'mine' (cut and paste to fresh install folders these folder for configs, documents, saved games etc)

• Create an installation order list (drivers first, important apps second, less important stuff third etc)

It may take a little longer to begin with, but it will be better in the long run.

Image your exisiting install to a secondary or external drive, if possible. If the new OS is a fail, restore the image.

i don't have any second drive... but i would just rather format and install for the good of my system. i just gotta convince my dad to agree with me
