What is a good download manager?

I am having problems finding a good download manager. I tried internet download manager and it is awful. I see a lot of people on the internet recommending this problem, but it is constantly crashing my computer. My computer runs completely fine without the problem working.

Does anyone know of any good download managers?

Depending on your browser choice my opinion is to stay clear of them. Is it because you feel you might get more speed or are you having drop outs that you cannot resume ?

I'm having drop outs that I can't resume. I prefer Google Chrome over IE9 and Fox.

The only Browser that is capable of resuming a broken download is Opera. That is why it is the preferred Browser of choice for compulsive down-loaders.

As suggested by Cyclic you should keep away from all download managers and exclusively use Opera to do your downloads.

The maximum download speed is dependent on your Network bandwidth. Supposing your maximum bandwidth is 8 megabits/sec. For this bandwidth you shall get a maximum of one eighth of 8 megabits in megabytes/sec or i megabyte/sec speed. In kilobytes it shall be one thousandth of this speed per second or 1000 kilobytes per second.

Due to transmission losses, hysteresis etc. if you get 90% efficiency then your maximum speed shall be limited to 900 kilobytes per second. And no matter which download manager you use it shall never be more than that. Windows 7 Network is capable of working with the maximum speeds. Therefore a download manager is like a placebo that gives you a feeling of security. It is of real use only because of its ability to resume broken downloads.

As Opera Browser can do that equally well, why have a needless program installed. And with today's stable bandwidths, download managers have become more and more irrelevant.

I use Free Download Manager myself because I have limited bandwidth at work and have to throttle my speeds to not bring down the office. It works well with IE and firefox, but I've had nothing but problems with it on Chrome. I usually find what I want to download in Chrome, and then cut and paste the URL into IE and let FDM handle the download for me.

I'm on a 5 GB a month cap on bandwidth so a download manager is necessary for large files as I may need to spread them out over a couple of months.

I don't use Opera so I don't think FDM a useless program.

There's no need for a good download manager, just use Mozilla Firefox browser and you can download all software, apps and files in any format from all sites.

Except that Firefox does not resume broken downloads, a point on which this entire discussion started. As I had stated earlier, Opera does if the download site permits.

I wouldn't be without one. I have 7 Mb/s download speed and find the host server can slow things down to a trickle without a download manager.
