Okay, right now I am running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 v.286 and as I type my BitTorrent is downloading Windows 7 Build 7068. After it goes dead on March 1st, 2010, I have 3 options.

1: Use my old backup disc of Windows XP Home Edition that came with my older laptop.

2: Before updating to Windows 7, I use the Backup and Restore center to get back to Vista when 7 expires.

3: Buy the RTM Windows 7 - plz come out before March next year!

What do you guys suggest?

why on earth does bill need the money?? lol doesnt he have everything already? he has so much money, the time he uses picking up a $100 bill off the ground, he just LOST money that coulda been made besides picking up the ben franklin

I'm gonna make a BOLD prediction and say RC doesnt hit until mid august-september... giving the RC about 4 more months until final retail. Putting the release date around the first of spring... mid march next year.

You've also got Option 4) Donload the Official RC when it appears -- this won't expire until JUNE 2010 giving you an extra 3 months to decide.

BTW I'd keep a backup of your VISTA installation locked away somewhere since you'll be able to use this to bur a CHEAPER UPGRADE copy of W7 rather than the full price version.

Although you will be able to do a clean install you'll need the original VISTA installation to start the INSTALL.EXE file from.

I think also that as from Windows 7 the RETAIL versions will be shipped both in x-86 and x-64 bit versions (whether on the same media or as 2 separate DVD's I don't know).

You won't have to send away like you did with VISTA HOME PREMIUM and ULTIMATE to get the 64 bit versions.

Cheers

I pick option 2 and 4 - use the backup and restore center to backup Vista just in case I don't buy the RTM release. Either way, I thought 7057 was the Release candidiate leaked by "mistake" by Microsoft.

Either that or they may be aiming for a Christmas release - anyway, thanks for the suggestions. Something that is ironic is that Windows Vista was worked on for 5 years and it turned out "horrible" while Windows 7, which only has had 2 years of development and looks to be AWESOME, which at first thought does not make sense.

Microsoft have had a lot of time to reflect on their mistakes with Vista. Personally I never had a problem with Vista, I thought it was great. Windows 7 on the other hand, is (and to quote evanspec) "AWESOME".

What I would do, and have done, is to install W7 in a dual boot. It is a beta no matter how stable everyone says it is still a *beta*. Keep good backups of your files. If something happens and 7 gets broken (plenty of us have managed to do that) you still have Vista to do what you need to do, such as come here for answers. Then when the RC comes down you can clean/upgrade install 7RC.

Actually, I plan to run Windows 7 "natively" on my computer - and since Windows Vista wasn't that fast for the hardware it was on - 2 gigs of ram and a dual core processor - so I expect that if I ran it with all my power dedicated to it, it would blow my mind and expectations, and I expect that to happen -

Um no... that is not right at all.

Windows seven is "7" years of development as it is just Vista + 2 more years. It makes perfect sense.

And Vista was not horrible at all, that is a load of bull crap.

And Vista was not horrible at all, that is a load of bull crap.

hehehe... umm. no. it was, especially when first released. Hardware compatability issues, and lets not begin to speak about application compatible issues.... which took forever to fix.... and when MS didnt fix alot of those issues, alot of "hardcore" users (especially gaming community) that didnt turn to or werent *nix, stuck with XP..... /me raises his hand

this is why the hopeful "vista experience" bombed around the "community". I think that MS rushed Vista becuase of the compromise of the wpa in XP, and tried to "redo" it in Vista, and that took the focus off the actual works of the OS. After that wpa was figured, i think MS finally kinda gave up and are now and have been in the past 2 years trying to fix what they didnt in the Longhorn stages... which has bled over to the creation of 7. Tis why i keep preaching about hoping they take their time with this OS THIS TIME... by observations thus far, they have been on a good track, but still with some improvements to go.

Besides, I quoted horrible because it worked for me, but I didn't know they were making 2 OS' at the same time and I thought Windows 7 meant 7.0 because Vista was 6.1 or something like that.

Sure. Think about server editions, MS Home Server... and really you could even throw in the office programs as far as development chain, and backwards compatability. Remember a little known OS call ME. Ppl didnt upgrade or use that unless they bought a pc with it pre-installed, and even then, some of those ppl chose to format and reinstall 98 or win2k. Then this whisper of a new OS came out called whistler. On the heels of whistler was this strange creature called Longhorn(a very hungry beast, not a mountain range), dual and triple booting... thus the story continues...? history repeating? you be the judge?

You are the first, and hopefully the last person that I have ever seen compare XP and ME. For those who actually used ME, and reverted back to 98 2nd edition, would never put ME and XP in the same sentence. XP is NT

Vista gave problems to those who didn't have the hardware. I built a new system (same exact one I have now) to specifically run Vista, and I have had no issues. x64 version on top of that.

No. but one could say that ME was "98ish" and XP was ME + win2k with a skin.

7 has flavors of everything Longhorn(ideas that were dropped) +XP (funtionality and stability) + Vista (eyecandy IMO) and a dash of 2k3 and 2k8 server

I would say that XP is Win2k with broader compatibility. And if you had to add an OS, I would have said 98 2nd ED.

ME, was a sloppy release. ME wouldn't have existed if they could have united the NT tech, with the customer Windows platform quicker. :(

Who Cares I'm priceing out hardware for and OCT 09 buy. Come on 7!!!:p
