What is the default waveout device?

Hiya,

had a problem with a dvd where the audio was encoded in 7.1 or 6.1(?) but my system only has 2.1 and I struggled a fair time with it until I downloaded KMPlayer and used as the audio renderer -> default waveout device.

Now a little bit more explanation, when I played the dvd on my current media player, I couldn't make out some voices and even if I did put the audio to 100% on my computer and on my Sony SRS-D8, I didn't hear a thing.

It's weekend so answers will probably start popping up monday sharp.

Sounds like a possible configuration issue in the media player. Apparently it is converting the surround sound (7.1) to 2.1 so the PC sound can play all audio??

Yeah well my computer only has two speaker units and one subwoofer so obviously the system would need to convert it, though maybe I wouldn't hear crackling if it wasn't converted..

I mean yeah I could have plugged in my 7.1 system but I've heard that it's kinda stupid or unnecessary to use a 7.1 system on a computer, but maybe I'm wrong?

Hmm okay maybe I should then upgrade, if this was a recommendation? or were you merely stating some facts?

so default waveout device is just windows, so maybe I should buy like an external sound card, for example one of those asus xonar cards?

Just stating that many have 5.1 or 7.1 speaker systems. My on-board Realtek is 7.1 capable, if I had a 7.1 speaker system.

So you are saying that it might be my motherboard that doesn't have 7.1 capability?

No, not saying that. You are reading more into it than my statements. Just made a comment about my sound hardware capabilities. Most modern on-board audio systems are 5.1 and/or 7.1 capable.

Great, I always seem to make things too complicated or presume that they are.
