Apparently most techies recommend the Q6600 over the Q8400. It has a larger cache which will help with overclocking. Since the Q6600 isn't available at decent prices anymore, your best bet if you want something Intel in nearly the same price range is the Q9400 (2.66 w/ 6MB). Although personally I'd recommend the i5-750 (2.66-8MB L3) or the X4 965 (3.4 - 6MB L3) if you don't mind going AMD.

I had the 965 and it was pretty much rubbish as it has alot of heating issues so im gona go Intel as the rest of my builds are intel and work fine.

I just recently purchased a q8400 for my new build. So far iam really happy with it but I did upgrade from a P4 so its been a big jump for me. I cant comment on overclocking as I don't really need to for my usage. Temp wise I have noticed it ranges from 30-70 but it could be due to the fact that I bought a mini case and there could not be a good enough air flow. I will have to increase the speed of my fans to see if i can get it to drop lower.
