I have just begun to use the windows 7 software. When I open a document folder the Word file names have an icon overprinted on the blue W.

The 2 most frequent mystery icons are:
- a green circle w/ white check mark
- a red circle w/ a whit "i"

Also found on excel files & picture file names.

Could anyone tell me what these icons mean & is there webpage that would explain the meaning of the icons,

Thank you

Those.... sound an awful lot like the icon overlays for Tortoise SVN...

Areyou a developer? Do you have Tortoise installed ion your machine?

Though it's not very common to accidentally have added items to svn (and therefor gaining the icons overlays) withough you having known you did it :D

Though maybe someone ripped off the icons and are using them for something else. But I do not believe that those are native to windows at all but to some other installed program (like Tortiose).

fseal is correct, those are very similar to tortoise SVN icon overlays. See here;

tortoisesvn: Windows Explorer Integration

This is the complete set from the above site;

But the two overlays on "History of Jamestown" and Excel" in your example are not Tortoise overlays;

Are you using a document manager of some description?

Icons do not normally contain any information about the program they are used with, and they are not program specific. They are merely small graphical symbols. You can only tell what program might be using them by seeing which program they are attached to.

Thank you for your help.

I'm not a developer. I'm a single user w/ a new computer. I have also just begun using an iPad.

RE:Document manager
Would either iDisk or Dropbox fit that description?

Possibly, I don't use either, so I can't tell you.

What they "mean" can only be determined by looking at the program manual/help/description.

They also only "mean" whatever is specific to that program. If the icons are used for something else, then they are just meaningless small graphics, which you can use for anything at all.

If you want to find out which program is using these icons, then download this;

Ah ha!! Those are most certainly Dropbox icons, sir. I use DB religiously. Green check = synched to DB, red means there was a problem. Gray circle = currently synchronizing.

I also like coffee. I'll take a basic triple grande extra-hot breve stirred ristretto caramel machiatto.
Here's an example of my own dropbox icon.
