What is this reviewer talking about with reguard to the 3570k ?

As all the other reviews say, this baby runs hot. If you don't have a lot of patience, or the knowledge to de-lid and solder over the cheap paste used on the heat spreader....

The heat spreader is the metal cover that is thermally bonded to the CPU that is underneath. I think he is talking about replacing the original thermal past with something better. He says "solder over" but I think he got that wrong. The heat spreader might be soldered around its perimeter but I'm pretty sure thermal past is used to get a good thermal contact to the CPU die that's underneath it. It may actually be a thermal glue or epoxy that bonds the two together. I've never tried to remove a heat spreader myself.

Ya, it sounds dangerous, to the cpu. I watched them make the cpu`s on How it`s made the other nite, but they went way to fast. LOL I`m just really curious about was he`s actually doing.

So he`s pulling off the heat spreader, adding better grease and soldering the top back on, gotta be 1 dam good welder.

If I was ever going to try and remove the heat spreader I would want an already dead processor for my first go around.

Amazing that Intel would let that happen.

I gotta admit, the kids got talent, seems easy enough to do, but I`d glue it back on somehow.

The heat sink and fan should hold it down OK. Gluing it back on wouldn't hurt if you can figure out what to use.

I'd ran multiple tests after viewing this Y.T article some months ago.

I'd ran in particular tests with OCCT software, Cpu Linkpack enable and w/Cpu slighty overclocked at 9.1%, i have never reached over 10c° differences between each core. I couldn't care more about unmount the CPU for changing that thermal paste.

Might some different pastes on 3570K series being used?

The 3570K does get very hot when running stress tests. But, during normal usage, it does not get much, if any hotter, than other chips. All previous CPUs , the IHS was soldered on. But, for some reason, Intel in it's infinate wisdom decided to glue this one on with thermal paste between the IHS and the die. Those who do these things say the heat comes from the fact that the glue Intel used is very thick and heavy, and holds the IHS up which causes it to not make good contact with the die. Thus, there is little way to get the heat out. It is only a real problem if you are a serious overclocker and want very high overclocks. You can glue it back on with a paste used in auto parts to glue head gaskets down. But, the deliding process is to replace the thermal paste and make sure that the IHS makes good contact with the die. Done properly, some of the overclockers have shown results of a drop of up to 35°C while running prime at high overclocks. That is what the guy was trying to say. Previous CPU were almost impossible to delid because Intel soldered the IHS down. Ivy Bridge is the first time, I am aware of, they decided to glue it down.

Ya, I`m not gonna mess with a brand new $200 cpu, I`m just gonna install it and see how it goes. I got a decent cooler and I`ll be switchin to water soon.

Yea, I wasn't advocating to do anything like that. I was only answering the question and trying to explain the reasons. Mine runs hotter than the i5 and I haven't done mine. I don't blame you.

Yes, I'm using reasonable overclock settings for gaming with a little plus with that i5 K Core and got some decents temps in return. Even after some hours gaming it stays decent.

It is always good (and enjoyable) to know such manner can be done on that i5 K CPU just in case and when warranty will be void. Possibilities come offered for carefull hands being put on it and start more serious overclock setting with a consistent motherboard.

Not hidding that at this moment it will be useless for me to unmount and change the thermal paste to gain fresh temps, as i'm not using my computer at its full capacity, even on games.
