What is wrong with my hard drive?

Hi,

I have been having some issues with my computer: it's been operating extremely slowly and constantly hanging/freezing. My antivirus and malwarebytes would also freeze during the scan and never complete scanning, so I think my computer might be infected with something. Someone suggested that I might have a hard drive problem, so I ran a check disk and got the following results. I can't understand what they mean, however, and was hoping somebody could tell me what these results mean. Thanks in advance for any help!

The results mean that your hard drive has bad clusters -- an indication of hardware failure. When an OS encounters bad clusters, it tries over and over to read them, eventually timing out. This causes long delays in reading from the drive.

In this case, my guess would be that the drive is failing, and the sooner you can get another drive and migrate the contents of this drive to it, the better.

Thanks a lot. Just a couple of questions though. Do you think I will lose any data because of this? How long until the hard drive completely fails?

And also, could this be the reason why malwarebytes isn't properly working on my computer? I already have a new computer but am hesitant to transfer everything over in case something is infected.

The symptoms you are having are very serious. Whatever is causing these bad sectors (usually unknowable) will probably cause more and they may effect your most important files. You could loose any or all of your data at any time. There is no way of knowing if or when it will fail completely. Some files are probably unrecoverable already. Backup your files now, while it is still possible.

All files of any importance need at least 1 backup copy, 2 or more backup copies if the files are of particular importance. many people have lost critical files because they did not follow this rule.

If you're in the habit of letting the laptop battery go dead or turning it off without a Windows "shutdown", this can cause file/disk corruption too. Those files with the replaced clusters may or may not contain valid data. Windows will attempt to copy the data to the new clusters but if the data is corrupt, the file(s) have a high probability of being unreadable.

You can check the system files by running SFC /scannow from the tutorial link below. It won't check your data files but it will tell you if system files are corrupt and will attempt to correct them. Use Option Two and if it reports uncorrected errors, follow the note about running it multiple times but reboot between runs.
