I'm one of those users who has been using Vista with no problems ever since Microsoft gave out RTM copies to beta testers. However, as a writer, I've watched the media completely destroy the public opinion of Vista, leading many to stick with Windows XP or to look for alternatives, even before they had tried Vista. Even with SP1 out, many have not bothered trying Vista on recent hardware and therefore could not realize the fact that it really is worthy of being XP's successor. If I had to lay the blame on one party for Vista's poor public opinion, I wouldn't lay it on Microsoft, I wouldn't lay it on hardware companies incapable of producing good drivers, I wouldn't lay it on the fact that XP is so good, I would lay it on the media for blowing things out of proportions.

Yes, the problem is exaggeration (it's in this article's title too, in case you missed it); bloggers and journalists alike use their personal experiences to prove their point in their writing. The blame doesn't solely lie with us, as Vista was by no means perfect, but we did manage to amplify the problems beyond reason. And if the beta is anything to go by, Windows 7 is going to fly. This is, by far, the best beta operating system the software giant has ever released. The media has locked on to this, and is using exaggeration already, before Windows 7 is even ready for prime time.

Nice find! And I agree with it 100%. Microsoft would have read all the complaints and bad reviews about Vista and have made 7 amazing (the Beta). Hopefully they add even more between now and the release date.

i agree with a lot of the points. deep down though, as the owner of an IT company, i had to look at clients and make my recommendations to them based on reality. reality was, the knock em dead laptops for the road people were going to run like dogs and while we could strip away, up the performance a notch or two, have it run stable and cripple a lot of the annoying system warnings...it still ran like a filly having pulled a leg on the last turn and limping for the barn.

my personal laptop lay mostly unused because I just didn't have the time for the start up, hop on one leg, and shut down required of intermittant use. my HP pocket pc did things just as well, and a thousand times faster while mobile. that isn't hype, that was fact.

you're right though, this one is a winner but it is still very early days yet. what we want to see is MS keep it lean and mean. start up, shut down, do what i want and preferrably now. add stability and we are away, finally a reason to move on from xp. i am suspect of the quality of the feedback going MS way, i would not be surprised to find they actually stick to their original beta testers although they seemed to have largely avoided professionals in that rank too, at least in the early stages. making decisions which are essentially technical in nature i cant see being made by popularity polls. still, we are onto a good thing, let's hope it comes out the other end with both legs.

I agree with you also. Vista is an excellent OS. I beta tested and then got Ultimate for business and pleasure. It was such a huge improvement over various XP versions (32bit & 64bit)
The first thing I noticed was, NO CRASHES! Of course the interface and speed improvement was also a big plus point. The hardware support was abysmal and the public and press blamed the OS for the problems.
Win 7 is based on Vista, but this time they have improved things still further and hardware companies are working more closely with Microsoft!
The drivers from hardware mfg's also have to be tested for a certain length of time before Microsoft will approve them for release.

Since I never used XP, mostly due to the bad press *it* received in the beginning, I can't make a comparison, but I am very happy with Vista. Yes it takes a long time to boot, but I don't do that very often so no big deal.

I liked Vista, but recently i started having BSOD's constantly. Coudn't figure out what the problem was. Finally, the W7 beta comes out and i insta-installed it, couldn't be happier.

Yeah I have to say, that for a beta, this feels very finished. Most of the hassle with it is incompatibilities with applications and games, but that's only to be expected. I don't want to go back... ever.

Does anyone know if the Beta versions will be available up until launch?

As a lot of people are saying, they won't turn back once they get 7, but with Vista, a lot of people turned back, so that gives you an idea of how good it is.

For me, I never gave up hope in Vista, but that hope will definitely be broken as soon as Microsoft releases the finished 7.

I used vista for a while, compatibility wasn't the problem at all...
It was slow, It was hard to do some things. With the same hardware since i tried vista, I use now the beta of windows 7 and it's faster then XP. At the beginning I thought vista was good, I didn't agree with other people that say it was bad. But after a few days of use the system was slow, crashing and everything bad. So I realize that was true what people say. I unistalled vista and installed XP, the good old and fast XP.
So, yes, Vista is bad, but microsoft corrected everything bad in vista and we have Windows Seven. If continues like this bye bye Linux.

i think it depends on your PC specifications. Some people have computers that can't even run two parallel applications and wanted to install and use vista.
back in XP days yes you can run XP on any PC with low specifications
but vista...vista just want a powerful PC
for me it was just the fastest system i have ever used
So i think it's just a matter of time, people got to know that they should have a powerful PC to just run windows just like they know that they need a powerful PC for gaming.

that's the problem, vista need to much. With my comouter I couldn't run vista well, with Windows 7 (which minimal requirements are a little higher) it's running faster than XP.

but don't forget that this's a beta edition
the final release will has much requirements, at least that what i believe
windows 7 is just a brother to vista but more easy to use and with some corrections that were found in vista and requirements were not one of these correction i think

For being a BETA version it should be instable, but it's not.
I used Windows Vista BETA and final and both of them were slow. And I had the same configuration as today, my 1,25gb of memory.

Vista is a great OS. And its early demise was from people who couldn't understand why there precious museum relics that boasted celery chips and low end CPU's and hardware couldn't handle it.

They just couldn't deal with the fact that there rigs basically belonged in a museum and that printer that didn't work cause its basically an over glorified boat anchor.....

Yes it was sad to see how Vista was bashed from people like this......

remember for an op system to have legs for the long haul business, not the home user has to go there. that's where the money is, not only for the licensing but what microsoft loves to call, the total cost of ownership. up until the not to distant past, i was still booked to do rollouts for windows xp in enterprise situations, and when vista came along.....business, especially small business stuck with what they had rather than put a bullet into their heads. vista rollouts numbered probably less than maybe 5 percent of my business. putting vista on laptops was the death sentence for the operating system. if more people want a mobile solution, now apparently they do, then it needs to run on the platform. i have one desktop unit in my house that runs a very sweet potentially only one in the world, windows 95 that works a charm. and every bit as fast as vista and that on a pentium 133.

I have built 2 gaming rigs and with both of them I made sure everything was going to be Vista friendly and I have had 0 problems with Vista and all my games fly, I have decent startup and shutdown speeds and never get any BSOD's unless I have done something stupid.

The Key to having a successful OS is to know what your buying and check out the reviews, knowledge is everything!
