What order to install XP on virtualbox

Well, actually let me start at the beginning - and I apologize for length but feel it pertinent to guidance. I'm on Win7 64-bit machine that formerly was running dual-boot Win7 64 and WinXP 32 os' for the past year or so (thanks to I believe Brink's tutorial here). As time went on I've have rare usage of the XP proggies, mostly old graphics versions of PSP that I use for helping members in a group. In the back of my mind I supposed using virtualbox might be the answer. So when I had a late night issue with a program that landed another instance of xp on my machine, decided it was time to plunge head first...well after backing it all up

At this point I'm on clean install of Win7 (updated) with basics in place (Office, zip, revouninstall, etc.). I went to download and install VirtualBox and version 4 was there, so that is what I installed. My hard drive configuration is a single physical drive partitioned with disk management into at 350 c drive for win7 and a 100 d drive dedicated for xp. Total ram 4gb, duo-core 2.36ghz intel processors.

I attempted to put in new client in VirtualBox with the hard drive I allotted for it, but it wouldn't "see" it. Then I attempted to do so without a drive, then attempted to "attach" the drive. Neither worked. I'm wondering if I need to do the windows xp install first, and if so I'm unsure whether I need to just install on the D drive then pull into the client in VB or install directly from within VB and then attach the drive. Non of their forums nor files here netted an answer. I do have a full xp os disk.

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. I think I've reached that overload feeling...perhaps sleep will help. Oh dear, forgot to let you know I have Windows 7 Home Premium so don't have xp mode available...sheesh!

The Pentium Dual-Core T4300 (2.1GHz) does not support VT-x Support. So you will have to turn it off.
I recommend that you use an older version of VirtualBox or use VMware Workstation 6 - they seem to work on non-VT-x Support as well.

Without VT-x you can't use visualization programs such as VMware Workstation, VirtualBox, VirtualPC, etc...

You could also use Virtual PC 2007, predecessor of today's Virtual PC, which does not require hardware supported virtualization. It can be downloaded here: Download details: Virtual PC 2007.

Thank you Dean and Kari - at least now I understand the issue better as I do indeed have the T4300 dual core at 2.1 - I was tired last night...sorry. I believe the virtual box I had before is a version or two prior to 4. I will take a look at both the Virtual PC 2007 and older VirtualBox and find a solution hopefully. Thanks again.

EDIT: Just to let you know, home premium does not have the option for Virtual PC 2007 that I could find, it states you need Enterprise or Ultimate, and I'm not spending any more than absolutely necessary. I did reinstall 3.2 virtualbox and still have the original problem of how and what order to install XP....I'm currently reading the entire help guide...so far no info.
