What Screen Resolution?

Hello there people, I'm new to the forums and windows seven, for which I seek your help for. I have just purchased a 9600GT which is capable of a resolution of 2560x1600 but my monitor is only stated to be 1680-1050, My question is this, would it do my monitor any damage to force upon it the said 2560-1600?

Edit: It is an acer 22" and not one in specs.

it will not display resolutions higher than it supports, you will get a blank screen or a warning about the resolution not being supported.

If you monitor is wide screen and about 20"+ then it should be the correct setting.

The point of making a video card which supports a wide variety of resolutions is that it can support a wide variety of monitors are their native resolutions.

Many monitors can "scale" to lower resolutions, however, forcing a resolution that is higher just doesn't work.

There is one exception: Some video drivers and control programs will allow a monitor -- at its native resolution -- to be a window on a virtual desktop that has a much higher resolution. The problem is that what you see on your monitor is only a fraction of the total desktop area and you have to do a lot of scrolling to get from top to bottom or side to side.

Another, different situation is using two monitors and spreading the desktop across them both. In your case, if you had two of your monitors, you would get a desktop with a resolution of 3360x1050 -- but you need two monitors.

My monitor is a wide screen but I was wondering if it would cause damage or not if I forced it to the cards max which is more than what the monitors' stated at.

It won't work. Some monitors just ignore signals they cannot handle; however, others can be damaged if forced into settings for which they were not designed.
