I've had a dual boot vista/xp system for a couple of years but hardly ever booted into vista. Why would I? it runs about half the speed of xp. Now I'm dual booting xp/win 7 and I don't boot into xp very much. Mainly to record TV because my tv card doesn't work too well in vista or 7. Vista can sink into the deepest ditch and good riddens!

For now I think I'll keep my Vista DVD around, Since I have a Legit License, No use in abandoning it.

Also, Vista is still a Very good OS. I have never had any big problems with it. Sure, 7 owns the hell out of it, But for me to nuke the Disc would be a Waste of my Time and Money :P

I will keep a bootable Vista on my machine in case I need to boot it to help Vista users fix something. After awhile I gofget all the different nuances of an OS if I haven't used it for awhile, so I have to boot it and familiarize myself with it again so I can give people the proper path to something, or things like that.

Other than that, W7 is on my machine for good. Vista worked well for me but it booted so slowly after a few programs were installed and my sidebar gadgets that I use are started, no such issue with 7 as MS really fixed up that problem well.

Interesting posts.

The mistake MS made with Vista was they built it expecting a certain level of competence from both machine and user.

When it hit the market - those levels weren't there.

We all know it ended up on machines it wasn't built for and your average punter knows nothing about computing - and doesn't want to know.

If used on and by who it was built for, Vista is superb.

On my system , there is no noticeable improvement in speed or performance in 7 - in fact Vista boots faster - a few seconds, maybe- but that's a lot in percentage terms.

I am definitely keeping Vista - it is truly excellent.

Vista came on my laptop, so I have a OEM license. The only thing I really liked about Vista was the power options. I still preferred XP for raw speed. Now I have XP SP3 and Win7 RC on my laptop. Will probably never use Vista again.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
Vista RTM was horrible, even on a powerful machine. MS really screwed up by rushing it out the door when it wasn't ready for prime time. Vista SP1 on the other hand, was pretty good. I used it on my old trusty nForce2 rig for a year.

I have since replaced Vista SP1 with Win7 -- wow, what a difference, or should I say, what an improvement Win7 is over Vista... Like most of you, I'm anxiously waiting for RTM. But regardless of my positive experiences with Win7, I still liked Vista SP1 nevertheless. As a matter of fact, I just got rid of Win7 (build 7127) and installed Vista SP2 a couple days ago. Things are running smoothly for the most part... Windows Explorer seems to be a little more responsive than SP1 with no slow file copy issues to speak of -- well not yet at least, keeping my fingers crossed. Contrary to popular belief, SP1 did not resolve slow file transfers.

Perhaps the biggest improvement I've seen with Vista SP2 (so far) is the networking. My broadband speeds are back to normal WinXP speeds, using Vista default settings (no tweaking). Whereas in SP1, Receive Window Auto-Tuning caused all sorts of problems. With it enabled, browsing and downloads came to a crawl, barely reaching 60KB/s on a 2Mbit connection. I had no choice but to disable it to bring things back up to par. This is no longer the case with SP2 however.

Note: It seems the tcp auto-tuning feature in Win7 7127 is also "broken" like it was in Vista SP1. I have to disable it to get my connection running normally... Anybody else experienced this? Will be installing 7229 later today.

Good to hear you made good use of Vista. I'm going to keep Vista cause to me, it has been a really superb OS. Of course some people will beg to differ but it's probably cause of poor hardware. Even though I feel 7 has much more improvements on Stability Security and Speed, I still feel more at home with Vista. But I'm upgrading to 7 anyways. :) Huge Upgrade Loving Fan.

Never had an issue with Vista, been using it since it first hit the shelves. I've upgraded my girlfriends laptop with Vista when I first moved in and she only had 512MB ram & ultimate still worked well. I do miss some of the features of Vista (won't mention them though :p) and have a licence for ultimate so it's not worth ditching it.

Now SP2 is available it's even more stable & reliable :D

Saying that, i'll no doubt dual boot when i've got the HD space so i can use Se7en 99% of the other time LOL

I'm keeping it as part of a multi-boot system (see panel under my Avatar), mainly because I have paid for them and also because I occasionally still need to refer to them when answering questions over in the Vista forums. I shall be keeping them for the foreseeable future, certainly whilst MS are still providing support in the way of updates etc.

Guys you should start burning, microwaving, incinerating or whatever you want to do with the Windows 7 instead of Vista. Why? Windows 8 is around the corner.

Btw, Seven is just a little better upgrade of Vista. It's the Vista Service Pack 3, I guess.

Vista RTM was horrible, even on a powerful machine. MS really screwed up by rushing it out the door when it wasn't ready for prime time.

Rushed? You call SIX years from the release of XP in 2001 to the release of Vista in 2007 rushed?

And don't try denying it: the one reason why Vista was in fact late was because XP and XP SP1 was being torn apart by an over abundance of security flaws and other instabilities, and Microsoft had to take many important developers off the Longhorn project in order to focus primarily on XP SP2. It's amazing how short peoples memories really are..

But back on topic, if you'll forgive the unavoidable rant.

What to do with my Vista x64 Ultimate licence? I was originally planning on building a Media Center PC for my dad, link it with my Windows 7 machine and stream the media. Get him off the old-fashioned style analog TVs that can only do one thing. But I've found a network-capable Media Player with PVR support that will cost be about half us much.

So I guess I'll probably end up saving the disc along with the rest of them, XP, 2000, ME, 95 and 3.1 - untill I need them.

But make no mistake, I went dual-boot between XP and Vista, and abandoned XP about 4 weeks later in favour of Vista. I did the same two years later with Winodws 7. I dual booted, but THREE days later I took Vista off in favour of Windows 7.

I've been using Windows 7 since the first public BETA Build 7000, I'm now on the RC Build 7100, and I'll most defintely be using Windows 7 Ultimate when it hits store shelves (maybe a month or two earlier - I work at a computer store :D ).

Vista is the OS that Microsoft "finally got right". Windows 7 is Vista done even better.

Vista was good only for the eye not as an OS. People got into Vista just because they bought a new computer in the last 3 years and it came with Vista in it. People didn't need Vista. 50% of them changed back to XP. It is a matter of what you use the computer for. If you only play some games and surf the internet Vista is good but if you need to do some other things also and I am talking about IT, Vista was a no-go.
Who tried XP on the new computers(dual core or quad core) knows exactly which is running better. Next year everybody will forget Vista. Let's enjoy the real MS OS, Win7!
