What shall we do with Vista?

Vista was good only for the eye not as an OS. People got into Vista just because they bought a new computer in the last 3 years and it came with Vista in it. People didn't need Vista. 50% of them changed back to XP. It is a matter of what you use the computer for. If you only play some games and surf the internet Vista is good but if you need to do some other things also and I am talking about IT, Vista was a no-go.
Who tried XP on the new computers(dual core or quad core) knows exactly which is running better. Next year everybody will forget Vista. Let's enjoy the real MS OS, Win7!

This isn't exactly true. Everything I've tried on Vista has worked just fine. I bought a new computer in February 2007 and yes Vista came with it, but I tried XP on the same machine and didn't care much for it anymore. It felt so dated. I did IT work on Vista machines and never had much of a problem. I agree that Windows 7 is a better OS, though. :)

Rushed? You call SIX years from the release of XP in 2001 to the release of Vista in 2007 rushed?
Far from it, but MS did rush things at the very last minute. Personally, I felt Vista should have RTM'ed in the spring or summer of 2007. Had they given it an extra 5-6 months, I believe we would have seen a more polished product.

Just my 2 cents...

And don't try denying it: the one reason why Vista was in fact late was because XP and XP SP1 was being torn apart by an over abundance of security flaws and other instabilities, and Microsoft had to take many important developers off the Longhorn project in order to focus primarily on XP SP2. It's amazing how short peoples memories really are..
I'm very well aware of this.

Rushed? You call SIX years from the release of XP in 2001 to the release of Vista in 2007 rushed?
Well, After the 'Longhorn reset' in 2005, There was really only Three years that "Vista" Itself was developed. I know some LH Stuff still lingers around Vista, Even Windows 7, But Vista even uses a Completely Different codebase than Longhorn. (Longhorn was Built on XP directly while Vista was Built on Server 2k3's Kernel <updated to the 2k8 kernel with SP1 in 2008>)

Indeed, But Microsoft is Huge, And Longhorn had far too many Build Labs anyway. :p
But the Security FAILURE known as XP was not even bad enough to delay a OS THAT long. LH's Largest problems lie in the fact that they were using a severely outdated codebase and trying to build many new technologies on it while still keeping all the old Luggage. Like With Windows ME.

But heh, I could rant on Longhorn for hours without end lol

Would be a cold day in hell before MS gives free anything (aside from Beta/RC's).

If anything a discount, but thats it. I don't agree to free upgrades otherwise they'd make no money to pay for all that hard work!

Still liking my idea of microwaving the Vista disc when I get a W7 disc. :)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me there's hardly any diff between vista sp2 and w7. I have it dualbooted, and as soon as my preorder of w7 sp2 with a torrentsite arrives i'll consider installing it as main with vista as second.

Till then i'll spend my money on faster ram....

Can someone elaborate a little more on "Longhorn" I always thought Vista WAS Longhorn...just froze development in 2004 and then resumed in 2005. It seems Longhorn is a completely different OS from what I'm reading on here. Also I read someplace that there are videos of the Longhorn UI? What does it look like? WHAT Longhorn features still linger in Vista and 7? Just curious :)

Windows Vista's codename was Longhorn.

Just as Windows Seven codename is 7.

I believe Windows XP was codename Blackcomb as well.

XP was Whistler, Vista was both Longhorn/Blackcomb, then 7 retook the name Blackcomb then Vienna...I honestly wish Microsoft went with Vienna...sounds nicer than "7", either way we're gonna have to type "Win7" or "Se7en" just for noobs to know what we're even talking about lol. :geek: I also wish Microsoft had modified the Vista Aurora theme a little more in depth, than just pasting over some weird drug-influenced ribbons and birds, bugs etc etc. It just gives that "generic" vibe to it compared to Apples overall theme.

Windows Lognhorn was originally ment to be the OS "In between".

Kinda of like Windows 7 is Vista+, Longhorn was XP+ (in a manner of speaking). and Promised to be Released in 2003

Early Longhorn builds were even named "Longhorn XP Professional" In fact, That's what most Longhorn M3 Builds were named. (Such as Build 3718) Build 3683 Desktop(Look at the Build name)

It Became apparent though by PDC 03 that Microsoft was planning a little differently than people had thought, and they were going to make LH into a Major release.

In WinHec 2004, Longhorn build 4074 was leaked. This build was Horible.
Here is a Image of the Desktop of LH Build 4074 "The WinHec Build"

Longhorn was Very buggy, And Very in-complete. The Filesystem they were working on (WinFS) also was a diseaster. By This point, No one thought Longhorn would make it to gold in time for a 2005 release.

In 2004 Geeks and Microsoft started to realize their was no real future in Longhorn, Built on a Old, Buggy, Junked-up codebase, Longhorn was deemed a failure and in 2005 the "Longhorn Reset" Happened.

Longhorn 5048 The WinHec "
Longhorn Developer Preview"
Windows_Longhorn_Build_5048.png

Build 5112 "Vista" Beta 1
Build 5259
Build 5385 "Vista" Beta 2

When the Reset happened Longhorn went from being XP+ to Being "Server: Home and Office" -My Nickname for Vista/7

Also, There have been many "Longhorn revival" projects. All have failed though. The one that got closest to "Reviving Longhorn" was "Longhorn Fusion" Which was in fact a project aimed at bringing the Longhorn look and feel to Vista. Though now With windows 7 the LHF team has stopped development on LHF and gone onto some new ideas.

Hi,

Bizarrely, MS built Vista expecting a certain level of competence from machine and user.

It ended up on neither - consequently, some had a bad experience and blamed the o/s.

It was not Vista that was at fault ( why it ended up on those machines has been subject to much debate).

I have had a great experience all along with Vista on a $799 desktop.

MS have done the obvious thing and rebuilt it.

Now those with $349 laptops can have the same Vista ( or , if you prefer, NT6 ) experience - and really enjoy the performance and functionality I have had all along.

That has to be a good thing.

Personally, I've never had an issue with vista. My laptop came with sp1 on it, but it ran quite well as my laptop has 4gigs of ram and a 8800GTS. Now its even better with sp2. But when 7 officially comes out, I'll prolly take all of my files that I keep on vista off, and then shrink my vista partition to where it has maybe 2 or 3 gigs of free space, then leave the rest for windows 7. That way if anything ever happens to my 7 installation, ill still have vista for looking up solutions.

Unless your MBR is corrupted at some point.

Btw, don't shrink your Vista too much. If the page file is reduced to small your performance will take a hit.

Personally I'm keeping my Original DVD's of Vista. The use of them did legally at a different time, allow me to buy 2 more editions at only $50.00 ea as a download.
You nevr know MS might open that option again, and allow you to BUY Win7 at a reduced cost.
