Ok guys I am looking for a setup that will not effect the performance of my computer to bad, but still keeps me safe from the dangers on the web. I currently have Avast (free version), Malwarebytes (free version) and am running Windows Firewall. Is this protection adequate to protect me from todays threats?

Hello Tyler,

In addition to what you already have, adding a router with a built-in hardware firewall included would help protect you more. It's doesn't need to be an expensive one to help protect you.

You are safe with that security setup, especially when you remember never to open unknown email attachments and use your brain when surfing and installing.

That is a good combination, although I prefer Microsoft Security Essentials over Avast.

i suggest you use a firewall that blocks OUTGOING connections.

windows firewall doesn´t block by default, it can do it, but that requires a lot of manual configurations by creating rules.

there are FREE really good firewalls available,
take a look at this list : Results and comments - www.matousec.com

Comodo & Pc-Tools are at the top...

BUT, if you choose Comodo, do *NOT* install the "hopsurf-toolbar" !
it´s considered a security risk by experts, (fx. Corrine) and since it´s prechecked when you install,
you *MUST* uncheck those 3 "options".

i really recommend it, have used it on Windows 7 since Windows 7-beta,
works great and also has Defence+, that keeps an eye on every program that wants to run.

also get Winpatrol, which is a "must have-program", it´s a free program that also monitors your PC.
it´s recommended by experts, (Corrine).

Thanks. I think I will try Comodo. Seen really good reviews on SF and somewhere else, can't remember where though:)

Dear hackerman1,

On the link you provided it said Comodo was free, however when I click on the link it doesn't let me download the free one, nor does it provide any leads on where to go.

hi !

tylerorr95: http://www.comodo.com/home/download/download.php?prod=firewall

not sure what Jacee linked to...

one thing that "dropped off" while copying the text in my post above: do NOT install the ask.com search engine !

Jaceee: "I had non stop problems with Comodo. It's extremely agressive about which web pages it will let you visit, so good luck to you."

???

Comodo´s firewall doesn´t block any websites.
