what the font?!!

I seem to have a large number of fonts on my relatively new and sparsely populated Win7x64 pro system.

They have weird Asian names such as BatangChe and Aparajita and DaunPenh and DokChampa. They all appear in the Fonts section of the Control Panel with oriental font symbols (kanjii?) in place of the customary "ABC" and they are all greyed out.

When I try to delete them Windows will not let me claiming that these fonts are "system fonts." Is that true? Are they system fonts? I find it hard to believe. I've never seen these fonts in any previous system...

I did not install these fonts, I will never use them. I do not want them. Is there any way to change the properties on these files so that I can delete them without getting a pop up saying that they can't be deleted?

Or should I just leave them alone?

Here's one way to delete or remove unwanted fonts.

If you want to uninstall them to gain more space on your harddrive, then I wouldn't worry about it as font files are small.

However, if you want to delete them to remove them from the list to make other fonts easily accessible, then follow those steps

then i thought that i may meet this really hot half-malaysian, half-nepalese chick on msn, and may blow my chances if i deleted the asian fonts.

well i've yet to meet her, but the good news is that my pc hasn't blown up yet with having unwanted fonts installed.

well i've yet to meet her, but the good news is that my pc hasn't blown up yet with having unwanted fonts installed.

They do take up room, however, and most of my word processing programs don't even see them as distinguishable font--they all look pretty much the same in Wordperfect, for instance and a lot of them are so tiny at normal sizes it's hard to work with them.

Did Microsoft include them for some reasonable reason/purpose? I can't figure it.

it's true they take up some room, but it's only a few megs, which is a pretty negligible amount of space these days.

i assume microsoft kept them so they wouldn't alienate over half the world (or whatever the fraction is).

Sometimes you just have to ignore all the globs of fonts your OS comes with and zero in on the ones you use.
Just make sure you keep your OS is running smooth and kept clean on a weekly basis!

After how many iterations of Windows, suddenly they're worried about alienating people?

And doesn't Windows come in language specific versions?

I bet half of the default fonts on my computer are these oddball fonts. For what? What purpose do they serve?

[sigh] Well, no matter, I don't have to pay any attention to them and if I install a font manager I can probably hide them.

But to my mind, for all the hip, hips and hoorays in the fandom, it's another example of Microsoft perversity. At least they could have made them hideable or deletable.
