What to do when Windows claims your product key is inv.

Help! I am installing Windows 7 on a new pc and I have reached the point where it is asking me to enter the product key. After entering the product key, it tells me that the key is invalid. I ordered the product directly from Microsoft so it can not possibly be fake. What do I do ? Send it back and ask for a replacement ?

I presume that you have checked to make sure that you are not confusing 1 I and/or 0 O and/or 5 S.

Did you perform a Clean installation using an Upgrade link?

I get no prompts.

The file is there but no response from the program.

My product key has no O or 0, No S or 5, and no I or 1.

The product is actually an upgrade, but I did not use any links - just did a clean install using the 32 bit product. It looks just like the 64 bit install except it won't accept the key (I ordered two product disks).

Shinobi and kegobeer are onto something. Some people cannot activate a clean install done with the upgrade media. There are a couple of tricks to solve that. And they're probably in the thread keg linked to so I won't bother typing it

Following the instructions on the upgrade and clean install resolved the problem. When all else fails, read the manual. Thanks !
