Hi guys if you take a look at my specs you will see my old rig, I am wondering what to do with it as it is still quite useful, One of the ideas I had was to host my own website from it and leave it running 24/7 does it have the balls to do that or maybe I could wire it up to my new system and if I did can I access it all using only the new system as I only have one monitor. But i am open to suggestions as I don't really want to scrap it or give it away,

Regards

Steve

EDIT__OOPS I typed too slowly.

You could set it up as a server and a backup system to store disk images and valuable data from your other networked computers. Don't need to much processing power to do that. If properly set up it could also be used to add to your network security.

Even though he said he didn't want to give it away, I must ask the OP why you would still keep it around? Is it because it's useful and you think you would be getting rid of something of value?

Consider giving it to a church, maybe one that teaches computers to the community. It's a tax writeoff which you cannot go wrong with.

My rig smegging rules!
Hi there
You could take it to your local Tip where Scavangers like me will readily grab it for nothing and create a new Server or Web site with it.

I got a decent PC from a Tip in S. London UK on my last contract working in the UK -- makes a fine server. Pic enclosed.

Otherwise - Giving it to a charity for 3rd world use to or a local Hospice would also be fine so long as the equipment was Electrically Sound.

Cheers
jimbo

I say keep it around, if for no other reason, than to have a back-up unit. Fire it up once in a while to keep virus definitions, etc, current. I chose to hang onto my ancient prior computer, and right now, I'm glad I did, or I would not be online at all!:geek:

Put a Linux in it, make a headless "home" server out of it, and access it through a web browser (like most broadband routers). It can store backups, music, video, whatever files you want...

Hi there
or even turn it into a Muti-media streamer -- It's easy to add a SATA card to old computers so you can add oodles of Disk storage to even old Pentium IV computers -- incidentally W7 WILL actually run on these too -- but Linux won't have any problems -- almost ANY distro you care to name.

If you aren't too experienced with Linux I'd go for something like OpenSUSE or UBUNTU.

Both work pretty much out of the box if you just want to set these up as servers (and the OS is of course 100% FREE).

Cheers

Definately make it a Windows Home Server. You don't know the peace of mind the ability to do bare metal restore gives you until you experience the need and can do it. Move to a new larger driver without the need to reactivate. Folder duplication gives you the ability to not loose important files no matter what. Headless server so no need for a monitor. You can also host a web site on said server....Current version is based on Windows Server 2003 and the next version (Code name Vail) is based on Windows Server 2008.
