What was your first OS?

Uh it was just today I remember of being a member of sevenforums and logged in. ;)

Back in the day my first time with dekstop. It was an XT machine with PC DOS having 5.25 diskette drive. Insert boot diskette to boot up, and insert another to run any program.

It was fun. I later spent much time learning dBase and clipper programming.

DOS 3.3 was the first DOS I purchased -- from a computer store selling counterfeit material. Since then, I have purchased TrueBlue Windows which includes a TrueBlue DOS. I have seen GWBasic/DOS, DR DOS 2.x, Windows 3.0 - here and there way back when. Long long ago, at a school, I saw a Tandy/RadioShack TRS-80[?] cassette-driven.

The first programming language I was taught at Uni was Fortran. We ran our programs as an overnight batch job on an ICL 1900, submitting our jobs as a pack of punched cards. Great fun was had by all should someone drop their stack of cards and have to sort them again :D

Old Computer OS

In college I worked in the reference dept. of the library. Eventually I ended up in the basement using the computer and the internet to share info. It was kept at 58 deg F. The mainframe took up a huge space. I would sit at a U shaped desk with four or five monochrome (amber or green) monitors and several keyboards - no mouse. There were several two cupped receivers with telephone handsets stuck in them. Most of the time I was sending agricultural info to India and the Philippines. After working with it for a while I would send and receive short personal notes from foreign students to their families through friends that worked at foreign universities.

(Note: If you know anybody who is planning to go to graduate school; suggest to them that they get a job in the reference dept. of the university library. It used to be a great preparation for doing research. Things might have changed too much.)

Cleaning out the garage and decided to "donate" 2 old xp computers to the garbage truck. Pictured is a 10GB HDD from Quantum and a 486 Intel and a AMD K6 cpu. The AMD K6 was a 1 core socket 7 monster! The HDD still worked and was fun looking at my old book marks.

Forgot something

Does anyone remember the CP/M operating system? I just remembered the two Kaypro portable computers lurking in the back of my closet. Some refer to as Frankenstein's Lunch Box. The following are specs for the Kaypro II model:

Price: $1595.
Weight: 26 lbs
CPU: Zilog Z80, 2.5 MHz
RAM: 64K
Display: 9" green phosphor screen 24 X 80 text only
Storage: Two 5-1/4" SS-DD 195K drives

I'm old enough to remember seeing a 20MB HDD the size of a washing machine, in the days when external storage meant warehouses full of punch cards.

My first computer had a 5.25" HDD with less than 3 gb of space. A lot compared to some of these numbers but nothing now. It also only had 32 mb of integrated ram, non-upgradable, although there was a slot for cache. It was a pentium MMX processor. I don't remember if it was the 250 htz model or if I was lucky enough to get the 266. A receipt shows that my grandmother paid over a grand for it including a monitor and printer, if I remember right. After that computer died I opened up the drive. It was a neat experience looking at such a highly polished plate that reflected better than any mirror I've ever seen.

That's interesting that you can't remember much about your 1st computer. I can remember just about every detail of my 1st which was purchased in 1984. It was an IBM PC with a 4.77Mhz 8088 cpu, 256K of memory, 2 360K floppy drives, CGA graphics (4 colors!) and a color monitor. I also purchased a dot matrix printer, parallel printer cable, PC DOS 2.1, IBM Personal Editor software and a box of floppies at the same time. Bought it at Computerland and with my IBM employee discount that all cost me $2500.

Well that is certainly not going to help my paranoia about early cognitive decline.

I do remember using the machine tho, and the long gaming sessions, just not much about the physical object itself and even less about the specs
