My card has 2 DVI-I outputs, so I run this:

Dual link DVI does not support running 2 monitors off 1 port, but allows for twice the resolution.

So you still only get 2 monitors.

My school has these as well. I am not entirely sure, but I would guess it is for mirroring.
I will have to try it at some point.
If you notice though, the one connected to the computer is NOT a standard DVI port.
