Malwarebytes is often suggested because it's a on demand scanner. Every security program scans based on different definitions. With the speed and complexity of changing malwares, there is really no way for one security program to keep up with all the changing malwares out there. No security program can catch 100 % of everything that is out there.

Given the choices, I would just take Kaspersky and forget about MSE entirely, if you want to afford it.
Malwarebytes is often suggested as a complement for full featured antiviruses. It is not as effective really, but can offer some extra protection if you run it periodically, since by default it does not scans automatically.
Combining two real antiviruses (like MSE and Kaspersky or anything else) is a no-go, as the will conflict and cause unnecesary slowdown.

Some things to think on.
1. Their/there is no fit all perfect anti program/programs. If their/there was we all would be using it.
2. Having a layered method is my position. More than one anti program to do a kind of double check or even a triple check in case something was missed by other programs.
3. The selection of programs must get along with the other programs and Windows 7.
If they don't your will have nothing but computer problems. Most any member that has been here for a while would of surly read enough post of how certain security programs cause nothing but problems with Windows 7.
4. Do not have more than one anti virus and one Firewall installed at one time on one computer. They will fight each other and Windows 7.
5. Investment in a Router is another layer of protection.
6. Some state they don't use any security protection they just watch which websites to go to. That is a NO NO. You can get infected from a well known perfectly safe website because it has been hacked.

So what does one do?
Soulfood asking what to do is a great start and you have did that.
Their/there to many security programs for one to test them all.
Here is what I do.
1. I use Microsoft Security Essentials which is made by Microsoft for Microsoft operating system so they do play well together. Millions of people all over the world use it. It's only been in the last couple of years that Microsoft has really got on the band wagon on concerns of consumer security. I think they are doing a great job.
Their/there are many good anti virus programs but they either don't get along with Windows 7 or they are not very user friendly. They want to take over your computer.
2. I have used Malwarebytes Anti Malware for years. Started off with the free on demand program which worked great. I stepped up to the Pro version because it does more than the free one.
3. I use the built in Windows 7 Firewall. Nothing fancy it just works.
4. Many other programs on a computer need to be checked for updates because most of the updates are security related. Such as Jave and Adobe programs. I use Filehippo Update Checker.
5. I also use a router.
6. I check Windows Update 2 to 3 times a day.
7. I keep all of them updated manually and it really doesn't take long to do if you do it a least once a day. I do it more often.
8. The big one. Security is not a after thought it is the first thought and I think you understand that or you wouldn't be asking the question and I wouldn't be typing all of this.
All programs and methods I have mentioned I use. They have all worked well for me but you must keep them updated.

I think a couple of scanners in addition to the AV suite is a good idea. Different programs find different things. I sometimes scan files with Virus Total to get this effect.

Yep sometimes I use ESET online Jacee keeps recommending. Paranoid is another layer of security.
